Racing. It’s A Rush (RIAR) is once again the title sponsor of the
prestigious International Jockeys Challenge taking place at Fairview
Racecourse in Port Elizabeth on Friday 13 November and at Turffontein,
Johannesburg on Saturday 14 November.
The RIAR International Jockeys Challenge sees a formidable team of
international jockeys take on a six man South African team.
Captaining team South Africa this year is Gavin Lerena. Last season’s
Champion Jockey, who recently set a new record for the most winners in one
month in South Africa.
Also included in this talented local team is Piere Strydom, rated as one of
South Africa’s all-time top jockeys who last year reached a phenomenal 5000
South African wins. Strydom describes the annual International Jockeys
Challenge as “fantastic” and his favourite local event in which to compete.
Making up the remaining members of this talented local team are S’manga
‘Bling’ Khumalo, Anthony Delpech, Greg Cheyne and Anton Marcus.
The captain of the international team is Ireland’s Kieren Fallon, who has
won the British Jockey Championship six times. Fallon is considered one of
flat racing’s greatest jockeys of all time.
A definite highlight this year is the inclusion of Hayley Turner in the
International Team. Turner, from England, is the first ever female to
consistently be one of the leading jockeys in the UK.
Other international team members include Pat Cosgrave (Ireland), Robert
Havlin (Scotland), Eduardo Pedroza (Panama) and Aurelien Lemaitre (France).
The jockeys will ride in four races at each event. The team that scores the
most points wins the Challenge but there are also awards for the top riders
in each of the legs and the top rider overall.
At both events, entrance is free and besides the enthralling international
racing, there will also be food stalls, entertainment for the kids and much
more.
Hospitality packages at Turffontein are available, ranging in price from
R425 per person (food only) to R 795 per person (fully inclusive). At
Fairview Racecourse various hospitality options are available at R200 per
person.
For booking information, please call 041 372 1859 for Fairview and 011 681
