Ernie Duffield was a legend, not a bad call at all imo considering he had only the use of his Binoculars and no TV etc to aide him, Trevor Denman who came along a bit later was another great race caller, we have been blessed with many talented callers in SA and the tradition continues to this day..

Horse Chestnut by a mile.....
go check his J&B win ..... nothing but nothing could touch him, not even the champions behind him that day, simply the best performance ever in this country

I did a article on this subject in 2008
just found it again now..gives a full run down on his race record...he was truly a Champion..
Bert Abbocrombie's comment after deputising for an injured Bobby Sivewright makes good reading and puts into perspective just how special this horse was..
"I had never ridden the horse before, and had no specific instructions - just to win as far as I thought fit. He was 2/1 favourite, but no-one really knew what he was all about. As he jumped I eased him back and he suddenly dropped the bit. After half a furlong he was tailed off last and losing ground, so I decided to shake him up to get back into the race. I gave him one firm tap down the shoulder. His reaction was faster than anything I had ever experienced. In a matter of strides he streaked through the field to join the pacemaker Peter Beware. From then on the race was a walkover. I can honestly say that I have never ridden or seen a racehorse with greater acceleration. It was unbelievable".
