Kauto Star was invincible around that Kempton jumps track, goosebump stuff
London News winning the July, I was the only punter on track shouting for Sleek Machine and under a peach of a ride from Striker he kept going, I will never forget that payout line after the all clear, bookies where looking for oxygen masks after the race

I started punting about 2-3 month before I joined the clan. My 1st bet was sa to beat aus in a test match played in austrailia. My.most memrable win was on elusive gold backed antepost @ 50/1 on holly came raceday I forgot about the bet totally .(Ever since elusive gold won the cape guineas nva saw him on the racetrack again wonder what happen to him )
The best horse doesn't always win the race.

First memory was of Excise winning the July in the late 50's. I was a child & my Dad had 10 pounds each way on him. The winnings comfortably paid for return trips for our family of four on the Union Castle liner to Durban & 2 weeks on a holiday farm.
My first and abiding hero was William Penn - also one of the most striking horses I have ever seen. Amongst many great performances - ran newly crowned July Handicap winner In Full Flight to a head in the Champions Stakes at age 10.
Thereafter Yataghan - who did me plenty of punting favours.
Then Politician - magnificent animal.
Also Gatecrasher - who always reminded me a lot of Secreteriat.
Horse Chestnut - not a great favourite of mine but undoubtedly the best horse I have seen in South Africa in my racing career.
But of all the horses I have seen the one who still conjures up my fondest memories would have to be.....Jamaican Music.
BTW - You'll notice that most of my picks were Durban horses. Which is why I am so critical of the manner in which this once great centre has declined into the mediocrity that it is today.

Gandolf is the one who the ball rolling. I backed him when he won the last race of the day at Germiston in the mid 70's. It was the first meeting I had attended. I was 15 at the time.
Point Park and Totally Bold paid R512 for a R2 double when I was in the army in the early 80's which was equivalent to 6 months wages helped keep the momentum going.
Backing Gondolier to win the July in 1984 for Pat Antelme at end of national service, made me realize the possibility of some type of long term financial interest in racing.
But the magical horse was the grey Wolf Power. The only live racing on TV was the feature races. He had that special aura and presence coupled with a devastating finish.
Hook, line and sinker

Racing in Japan under a new name if I'm not mistaken...
Do not follow where the path may lead.
Go to where there is no path.....

Gondolier won the July in 1985. It was number 9 if I am not mistaken. That was my first memory and that what got me hooked. I was 7 years.

Over the Air winning the July in 1979. I was nine years old and my mother had money on it. I couldn't believe people could get so excited about horse racing when I was a lightie. Good memories
