I recall some conversations about vets that amazed me. Like vets getting to yards and treating 30 horses, and charging each owner travelling fees. I also think trainers play their role in the schemes. One trainer once told me that his partners in horses paid for his share of the vet bills in the horse.

Thanks Bob, very interesting that this was discussed when the issue of the mark-up on medicine was raised on this site.
Very nice to have insight given for 900k machines and also very long and drawn out explanations that leaves one more confused than before.
James does a great job but the difference between a chat show and a journalist is to ask the person to clarify their explanations. Not having a go at you James but you should have asked him why there are 3 private hospitals at Summerveld????
The reason and answer is simple, they all print money. Why have they not simply put one hospital up that all three practices use??? The expensive machines would get more than 20% usage then, surely this makes sense unless the underlying motive is pure individual profit.
The explanation that the signing of a certificate for a vaccine & transport thereof is an onerous and expensive task is laughable. When did it become expensive to travel with a cooler box and besides all wholesalers would deliver to the training centres in cold storage with temperature data log devices in the boxes or perhaps we expect that everyone does not know that?
Why are Vets not willing to write a script? Once again is it the loss of 300% mark-ups?
Once again in horse racing the explanations given are as clear as mud and beg to be investigated but alas by whom.....
Imagine for a moment that every GP and specialist had their own hospital what any procedure would cost for a human? Now apply the explanation given and work out what owners are paying to vets that have their own hospitals.....

Again not justifying and I'm sure in some cases some mark-ups cannot be justifiable.
I do think there is a skewed psychology when it come to vet bills(and other services) and mark-ups. There are probably a bunch of people on this site who agree entirely with the opinion about unjustifiable mark-ups on medications yet knowingly have similar or worse mark-ups on stuff they sell or provide .
People do complain about for example the price of drinks at a nightclub , fast food, that pair of shoes or that handbag they so desire. The mark up on all of those things is at least hundreds or sometimes 1000's of percent as they go down the chain. But despite not being completely happy at the price, and being completely free NOT to have those things, they still consume them without a major fuss....because THEY want those things.
Of course when its something they DONT want...world crashes and righteous indignation ensues.
Just saying, maybe investigate vet mark-ups on relative to other enterprise for some perspective?

I agree Drdom, but you are missing a key factor, Summerveld is not an open market with available choices and there is nothing in my business that I mark-up 300%
