Why was De Melo adjusting equipment in the starting stall? Surely the horse should have been pulled out to do this or do you enter the starting stall because you are not ready?
Why would the starter immediately declare a false start?

Deeno, what really irritates me is a similar incident happened recently and the explanation given just cannot cut it for today. We have had horse racing in South Africa for over 100 years but we pay people who scratch their heads and make changes retrospectively when absolutely forced.
It simply cannot be accepted that some jocks didn't hear..... where is a warning light 100m after the start and someone with a red flag 200m after the start. Surely this can't be a new idea. If the starter cannot communicate a false start properly then how can one be called?
Why is a handler and jockey allowed to adjust equipment in the starting stall, surely the rule must be to pull the horse out of the starting stall immediately??? If this is not the rule then any jockey can cause a false start and claim to be adjusting equipment.
There are many other points but really is am just tired of the general incompetence......... like professional boxing this sport will be severely affected by dubious decisions and explanations that are insulting to anyone with a brain.

When this happens the commentator should be notified immediately by walkie talkie so he can announce "false start false start" the jocks won't hear but at least the poor punter and connections won't be as upset

Bob, there are dozen different things that could be done but alas they just aren't and there will need to be numerous meetings before anything is done. It is this poor management that disgusts me as an owner and punter.

In the days that I went to the course every meeting ,there was a fellow stationed about 200m from the start ,with a flag,so jocks could not possibly be unaware of a false start.
It was done away with, but I would have thought that reinstating (once the geniuses accepted it should never have been removed)would be a no brainer!
(this by no means the first time false starts have been ignored by part of the field)

Rob, i am so tired of the incompetence, i cannot imagine that in a short space of time you have a similar incident and nothing is done. Mr Parker needs to answer and stop reading what the rule is. How can you have a false start declared when the starter cannot ensure that the jockeys can see or hear it??????
He is totally correct that once a false start is called there are only two options but the real answers are not forthcoming;
1. Why has this happened twice in a short period of time without any change or action?
2. Why is a jockey and handler allowed to adjust equipment in the starting stall?
3. How can a false start be declared if this cannot be communicated to the jockeys?
4. What are the second & third safety indicators to ensure the jockeys have a clue that a false start is declared?

I heard the false start hooter was behind the stalls and not in front as it is supposed to be. How the starter couldnt see the jock was not on his horse in the stalls is beyond comprehension, donations for a white cane would be appreciated or maybe the starter should volunteer to recieve the first brain transplant.
No jocks heard a false start being called.
The rules give two options (nul en void=rerun the race) surely there should be a third option of declaring "the horse involved" a non runner ?
Just my thoughts but FFS cant they employ people that are just half competent to do the job.

I have a question (not a facetious one)
I know our starting rules differ from some in the UK ,and I don't think I have ever seen a handler assisting a horse, once in the stalls, but I'm not sure TBH.
We seem to have a lot of issues with the letting them go or taking off hoods etc ....are we unique?
