It was. Gold Bowl winners have a lousy record in the Gold Cup, could it be a case of taking too much out of a horse to win over a combined distance of 6200m in the space of a month, with the inevitable penalty in the Gold Cup that comes from winning the Gold Vase.
I've liked Bill Of Rights for this year's Gold Cup since he won last year's Winter Derby. He seems to have all the necessary stamina, he can quicken a hell of a lot better than most stayers (great for Greyville, especially), and he's trained by a genius at targeting horses for a specific race. My only concern may be that he will be a bit too high in the weights, after being within 1.5 kgs of the Summer Cup winner in the Lonsdale weights, but at this stage he is very much my Gold Cup fancy.
The idea of a pacemaker isn't half bad, a common sight in big European races (and not just from O'Brien's yard), but the way Bill quickened in the Lonsdale suggests he may not even need one.
Not bad for a horse they could hardly give away, hey?!

Thanks for your interest and contribution Magic. Yes, I think the thought at present is that the vase and Cup double would be a bit much, so the 2200 followed by the Gold Cup seems likely at this stage should his prep and everything else go according to plan. As you know Mike is a master at preparing horses for particular races and I have full confidence that whatever plans he has are for the optimum benefit of both the connections and the horse. The only major question for me at the moment is whether to visit on July day or go to Durbs and watch him in the Gold Cup.

Gold Cup, mate. If it has to be only one of the two, but then I'm a bit biased. I would rather stick dynamite in my ears and light the fuse with a blowtorch than go anywhere near Greyville on July day at the best of times!
Gawd, what a zoo. July = great race. July day = overrated nightmare. That's what TVs were invented for.

Yeah, Pirates. Last year's July was one of my best ever. I put my feet up on my couch and had hotdogs for lunch.
Never had better-tasting hotdogs in all my nearly-49 years!

Nah, I'm an All Gold boy myself.
To think that once upon I time I used to get out of bed all excited on July day, barely able to wait to get to Greyville...That was in a previous life without Tellytrack which, as much as we love to slate it and its never-ending coverage of crap we don't actually want to see, has really made life much easier.
It was also in the days before 12 race marathon cards became the norm. I'm too old, too grumpy, and too bloody comfortable at home to voluntarily put myself through that torture again!! (Shivers at the mere thought of it...)

Mathew
Rather come to Gauteng and watch the July at the races here. Plenty room !!!!!
And we have the novelty of yellow grass instead of the normal green grass, plus you can save yourself the trouble of watching the replays as the same horses will be running against each other again next week.
No need to stand in long tote queues, each punter has a tote operator or so it appears on race day.
