The best of the best will be freaks and for me those are
1)Horse Chestnut,a freak (first 3 yr old to win Met in over 50 years and did it in a canter (+ 7 lengths)
2)Empress Club, another freak, won the Summer Handicap (run then in April/May)as a 3 yr old filly (unbelievable)(I think only MdK has ever got a 3yr old filly to win the July, some 3 months later.)
3)Finally,
[hr]
In Full Flight
who made 2 absolute champions (Elevation and Sentinel) look ordinary as 3yr olds !(Beat them both often but in the Bull Brand stakes beat them comfortably ,by over 5 lengths,at level weights!!!
Easily my best 3!
definitely one of the very best that I saw...

No doubt one of the very best and one of my all time favourites. His second Met win bordered on the unbelievable when you consider his finish & the lumps of weight he gave the second horse. (If memory serves me correctly I believe it was 7kg; which few horses are required to do today at that level ).
But I suspect that Horse Chestnut is probably the finest local horse I have witnessed personally in my own lifetime.

Easy, you wont believe it but we owned spook express' brother, a colt called Green Street by averof whereas spook expess was by cosmic blush.
Green Street was a big black horse with a white blaze, and he was the hardest ever horse to stop. Once ran away with me , 5 times around our training track (1600m track) ... i jump off eventually. He was also the worst ever horse i ridden (and i ridden him in quite a few races) , and yes, he coulnd beat the cow we milked , absalutely useless in races.

If anyone can remember in the mid 80's there was a hyped-up and well marketed computer simulated race which was commentated by Peter Duffield on the radio. The race had all of South Africa's greats up to that time. For what it was worth and from what I can remember, Colorado King won the race with Politician third.
