Rule has always been the same
Neigh didn't punt the final field book, he punted the antepost book
Antepost has more drawbacks than a Robin Hood

I understand the rule and it is correct in this regard. But the more I think about it, the more ridiculous is becomes. So we all bet the odds on at antepost. We are on at 15/10, now 5/10. Horse gets scratched at the gates just before the off. Bet is a loser?????

In the anti post book if the horse is scratched within 48 hours of the race there is a refund

Stiff Neigh.
It's for this reason and many other reasons of which I was short changed previously that I never ever punt ante post.

Ante Post market has its place especially for value plays
This year I put a few rand on
Banner Hill at 100/1 after he ran a cracker over 1800m- losing bet
Safe Harbour at 50/1- before the Woolavington expecting a good run there.
The Conglomerate at 45/1- was always going to get a run as he was high on the log and this race clearly his main mission
Can't get hurt at theses prices and go into the race with a nice profit if either of these two wins.

If it was a proper antepost market... yes
Easy to get mixed up with antepost and early betting though

If bookies refunded withdrawn horses from the ante post market they would then have to make the appropriate adjustments on the live bets punters are holding. We punters want to have the cake and eat it.

Mac, what about the case with reserve runners like in the July now. We got hit with a 15% deduction and then the reserve runner comes in under 20/1 and we as the punter get nothing back. I have often seen in the lower rated handicaps where the first reserve is the best horse in the race and there is a scratching at say 10/1 we get a 10% deduction and the reserve comes into the race at 3/1. So we get a deduction and now have to beat a better horse. I feel that in the case of reserve runners the rule needs to be looked into urgently as this is daylight robbery IMO.

Aaaah I see your point. Then the punters should also receive an appropriate stretch on their live bets. The bookies too can't have the cake and eat it.
On another picture - my big bear is the 30% deduction on same horse doubles. If my same horse loses the 1st leg I should receive a cash discount because the odds for the second leg have lengthened.
