I saw Striker working on LW at the turn, but by the time he got his turbo tail going, Grant had the price in the bag. Striker is a top top jock, excellent tactician (you don't win the Durban July from the bush twice without a decent brain) but he was bested by a jock I think is the best of the young guns. Grant had that filly up with the pace, tracking the old boys Captain and the Eagle. Marcus pushed a moment early, definitely trying to steal a few lengths, and you think his moving 4 wide midrace and using the horse, did not help either.

Intrestingly, Last Winter swallowed the ground while young GVN was already saluting, reminiscent of the 2 jocks in the 2016 durban july with Conglomerate & marinaresco. only this time the roles were reversed.

Imho, where Marcus rode an excellent race in the QP, he did not cover himself in glory in the Met - yes he could not get in, but after that he made (in my view) an error in judgement in looping them around the turn - into a headwind off a fair (at least ?) pace ....

....without sectional timing we would never know for sure....but then Krambambuli and then LE seemed to get up early without having to motor for the front....at best I recon it was pretty sedate and picked up at the bend where....Strydom had to bustle LW to pick up the bit....want true pace then the July is just that type of race...

Watched the race a few times and read the comments: Last Winter had a very impressive finish irrespective of pace or tactics. He practically strode past the Met field into that headwind (as he can) as if he was dropped in at the 500m. I think we are forgetting he had only had 5 runs of which the first 4 were easy for him so he is relatively very inexperienced. As jaded as I am sometimes, I am very very keen to see him run again.
