He was revered as QPR captain by fans and players. I have to say I was highly annoyed when on East Coast Radio they mentioned the clubs he played for and as usual it was only the popular ones in SA which were mentioned, Man U, Chelsea, AC Milan, no mention of QPR or Glascow Rangers, a legend at both. He was inspirational as captain of QPR to some fine young players, Les Ferdinand, Clive Wilson, David Bardsley, Andy Sinton, Kevin Gallen. What great players the club had in that period, including south Africa''s Roy Wegerle and the like of Paul Parker, Alan MacDonald, Mark Falco, Simon Barker, Darren Peacock, Rufus Brevett, workhorse Ian Holloway and keepers David Seaman and later Jan Stejskal. The QPR fans refused to turn against Wilkins after his spell as manager started going awry with some poor big money signings after the sale of Ferdinand. I remember his chant well, "Super Ray, Super Ray, Super Super Ray, He's got no hair but we don't care, Super Super Ray!!"

Remember not being a massive fan of him as a player because he was seemingly always on the opposition. Listening to him on the radio over the last couple of years he always seemed a genuinely nice man and rarely, unlike most pundits, would he "have a go" at players or managers . Just a respectful and empathetic assessment in most cases. Was very sad to hear that he had gone .RIP
