With the final games of first round matches kicking off today, there are some interesting permutations of who can still qualify, and who will be going home :-
Group A
Straight head to head clash of who will top the standings and who will finish second between Uruguay and Russia. A draw will be good enough for Russia to finish top of the group.
Group B
If my calculations are correct, Iran can still qualify if they beat Portugal by 2 or more goals, as improbable as it sounds. A draw would be sufficient for Portugal. Having said that, assuming both Spain and Portugal win, it would be a case of who has the bigger winning margin to decide first and second.
Group C
France are the only country to have already qualified, however they could lose top spot if beaten by 2 or more goals by Denmark. Australia could qualify should they win by 2 or more goals, and should Denmark draw. If Denmark lose and Australia win, Australia will qualify in second with France as group winners.
Group D
This group has the most permutation outcomes possible, in that, with the exception of Croatia, all three countries can still qualify. If I were to bet on a game in this group, I'd go Croatia the draw because even if they lose their final game they cannot lose finishing as group winners. I would imagine Croatia would rest a few players because of their strong position.
Group E
Even more complicated than Group D, 3 countries all with chances of progression into the round of 16, and top spot still up for grabs. One would have to favour Switzerland to top the group standings as their opponent's, Costa Rica, are already out and playing for pride. The clash between Brazil and Serbia becomes a straight knock-out should Switzerland win or draw. There would be mass suicide should Brazil not advance.
Group F
Like Group E, 3 countries vying for two qualifying spots. By losing to Germany, Sweden appear to have the most difficult task of progressing as they would have to beat Mexico, and here is where I am not sure, by 1 or more than 1 goal. I am not sure which criteria holds sway, goal difference or head-to-head, etc. For Germany, the equation is simple, win and they through, finishing position in the group is reliant on the outcome of the Mexico vs Sweden game. Top spot is up for grabs.
Group G
Straight shoot out for top spot between England and Belgium. Honestly think that finish second is the easier route.
Group H
Japan must fancy their chances of topping this group, I hope they do. Senegal vs Colombia becomes a straight knock should Japan win or draw.
The bets I would fancy going into the last round :-
Australia to win
Switzerland to win
Germany to win
Should be some really exciting match-ups.

With both Portugal and Spain for top spot and knowing goal difference would make the difference I feel the play of the night is the double on handicap (-1) for both... Double works out to just over 4/1.
