Not just Will Pays Bob but Do It Again never beat his own age group at level weights in a Grade 1 for 3 year olds...... Do It Again won a Grade 1 handicap. I think he is a nice horse and has achieved well but this award makes a joke of the 3 year old graded races, the question is why have them if your crowned champion 3 year old when the only Grade 1 the horse won was in open company in handicap conditions......
Anyway these awards continue to be fraught with inconsistencies...... The two year old awards are interesting, when Rat Burana won the Allan Robertson and then didn't race again as a two year old she was crowned champion two year old filly as she was undefeated. I suppose the panel can just chop and change as they like every year......
MIGHTY HIGH unbeaten and beat Celtic Sea & Dagmar in the Allan Robertson, Return Flight beaten by Dagmar, the more things change the more they stay the same.
These awards are a joke anyway

....Agree on your examples....how Mighty High did not get the award is suspect....one has got then think that it is not the equine merit for performance but who is pleasing who....

These awards are a joke anyway
Will Pays won a wfa Gr 1 (Bold Respect won a Gr 1 handicap) and beat wfa Gr 1 winner Attenborough who had earlier beaten Bold Respect in a wfa Gr 1. If the trio were regarded as inseperable, which they probably were, the next level has to be looked at and Will Pays also won a Grade 3 sprint while Bold Respect won a Listed.
When Dagmar beat Return Flight it was in a preparation event and she was receiving 2kg but at Grade 1 level at level weights Return Flight beat Dagmar by 4,25 lengths over 1600m, exactly the same margin which Mighty High beat her by over 1200m. So they were inseperable and the next level had to be looked at which shows Return Flight winning two races by 8,2 lengths and 11,25 lengths respectively.
The three-year-old award was basically an impossible choice so was decided upon by choosing the performance of the season (Monk's Hood surely put up the performance of the season but it was in a Grade 2), so it was decided Do It Again's performance in the July was the best as he had the third-placed horse beaten 5,5 lengths (unheard of in the July) and fourth-placed Majestic Mambo (beaten 0,75 lengths by Surcharge in the Daily News 2000) beaten by 6,75 lengths at level weight.
Baharin beat Soqrat narrowly in the Golden Horseshoe but unfortunately for him that happened to be a Grade 2 and Soqrat was then impressive in a Grade 1.
However, the only Gr 1 stayers race is available to 3yos alone and the Gold Cup remains the most prestigious stayers race in the land, so It's My Turn's feat of winning 3 Gr 3 stayers events in the space of 5 weeks was deemed superior to the SA Derby-winning performance.
Although cases can be made for a lot of the ones who did not win ultimately a winner has to be chosen and the above was the thinking behind the five most contestable awards.

The whole event is a sham. not related to the trainer or jockey
Mayfair should have won Owner of the year.

The point was simple about MIGHTY HIGH, a precedent was set with Rat Burana but when left to write a new story every year and poetic license to change the story line I am surprised Soqrat didn't win both the Fillies & Colts 2yr old awards.....

Not being disrespectful, but I always thought the Cape Flying and the Computaform to be the flag bearer for SA sprinters ?
