St Tropez, glad to hear you enjoyed it, I was in a box over the finish line and many of the private boxes were at 25% or empty.
There were 500 seats available for the Prawn lunch, were the 500 seats taken up St Tropez?

.....certainly looks like GC marketing took their foot off the pedal after the July and thought that the Gold Cup event could look after itself.....really a shame when they cant keep momentum and at least use a day like this to get even the traditional race goers to attend....can now see why racing in general is losing support from within....let alone trying to entice the outsiders and potential newbies....

To be honest, I don't think there was 500 seats taken at our venue but there was still a lot of people, it was a great atmosphere Tigershark.
The day was thoroughly enjoyed by the wife andf myself and we will certainly be doing it again.
Thanks for asking mate, hope you had an awesome day as well and made some money

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. At greyville there are too many people with box facilities that never use them. They either wait for a pay day on July day or that is the only race they attend. I have tried for 5 years to get a box and attend racing at least 3 times a month. Not being able to take my family and friends is a detriment to racing as the boxes sit empty all year.
I know the stands are also empty which perhaps makes this a moot point but like people with season tickets for other sports I would like to have some comfort if I am going to attend regular race meetings.
I was lucky enough this year to share a box with someone for the year and we were actually priveledged to go to the July day and use the box. However, when asking if our partner was using the box for gold cup, he replied no he had sold it for the day. That’s 25 people just from my side that then decided to watch the racing from home.

The Gold Cup has not pulled a crowd[I'm talking since the 90's].For some reason the Gold Cup pulled a bigger attraction when it was run 1st Saturday in August.
The Champions Cup which was called Mainstay International ,was previously run at Clairwood Park and this event pulled a massive crowd.Yes and I remember you could get a shot of Mainstay for 2 bucks
.
The sum total of it all is the planning ,timing and promotion of the events.I promise you that some Friday night meetings pull a bigger crowd than the Gold Cup.

.....I don't know if Racing South Africa still have a box....but I see it advertised on their site for people to rent for race days.....then again if the box is still with them....it is most probably in demand for these big racing events and never used or rented out at any other time....indecently how much does a box cost......

Attended a meeting during the week and met up with some mates. It seems like their community/welfare organisations and schools took a tent as a means for raising much needed cash. I really felt bad when it was said that they had to do a lot of number crunching and then go cap in hand to service providers to obtain some sort of relief.
Some were just trying to break even.... Was told that people were not interested in this Gold Cup function!
