I had the pleasure of meeting Jim (RIP) a few times when I lived in the Cheltenham area - he lived quite nearby.

Very down to earth normal guy who would always stop for a chat. - Anyway to help settle the argument maybe....

Best Mate's wiki page states:
In 2000 a share of 40% was sold to Markus Jooste for the sum of £242,000.

That said I never saw or read Best Mate as being owned by other than "Jim Lewis"

You can also check this video at about 1.59.45 to see Mr Jooste on the rostrum with Jim & Val Lewis receiving the Gold Cup in 2002 from Princess Anne.
