Cuckoo Modus is a prospector horse so when he finds a sadlers wells mare i'm sure a top stayer/mid distance horse in the making - might well only start showing as three year olds

Mmm, Modus? 10 runners, all beaten 4,5,9,10,12,13,13,18,23,25 lengths in latest. Clock must be ticking, although only had 2 or 3 runs each and fortunes can turn.

Here's a controversial theory, but you can pretty much 'classify' a horse after 2 runs (blatant excuses excepted, and taking all other available info into account). Every now and again you may be proved wrong, but I would say only 1 in 25 or 1/50)

i agree with you guys on this one but also two sprints does not help if the horse is bred for ground - hard game and i must say Cats you did teach me that sometimes you just got to let go of them (underperforming types) before it gets too much - less pressure on everyone

yes, if your trainer feels two 1000m the way to go with your hobnob, then so be it. Only 2 runners in this year's July won 1000m maiden, Floatyourboat and Russian Sage, both who won the Cape Derby. Doesn't prove anything, just interesting.

I think it depends on what type of owner one is and what you are expecting from the game; if you are in it only to have the GR 1 winner, yes, get rid of it after 2 runs - and wait another year. Chances are you will be waiting for most of your life.
If you are in the game for the love of horses and enjoyment of seeing them race, (and you can afford it) you will be more patient; plenty of examples but one recent case is Halie's Sword - took a long time to win and then won 4 in a row. With today's system of MR rated handicaps, you always have a chance of getting somthing back in monetary terms as well.

Hi Frodo
you also right, there is no point in becoming cynical about it. it's just as an owner you need some defence against the INEVITABLE bullshit that will come your way, and disappointment is bitter. Rather develope the tools to properly understand what you are seeing, rather than living in hope.
Here's another interesting observation:
Of the current crop of 3yo, I have counted 28 rated MR100/+
of those 15 won first start
22/28 ran 1, 2 or 3 first time.
It does not mean if you run 1-2-3 that you are 100+,
but if you are 100+, you should (not always!) show something soon.
It is very unlikely that a 100+ horse has not won in 5 tries.
