Peterpan, ive been racing for more than 40 years.
I have seen in the past, where it appears to be a 1 horse race like Winx....bookies then bet on the REST OF THE FIELD......basically to see who runs 2nd.
Should the good thing get beat, u would still be paid out for picking the OTHER selection.
Lets face it on straight win bets, bookies dont lay to much @ 1 / 10 or 1 / 20 so in order to lay a few bets, they have this other option.....DAVE u have been around the block - i'm sure you've seen this ?

Many years ago at Durbanville,Empress Club ran in a sprint and the bookies priced up for second. My memory is a bit sketchy but I think she was beaten by Marie Gallant. Sorry got this wrong, my mate was there Marie Gellant was favourite and Empress Club beat her.

Got confused my mate was on course and wanted to back her but didn't as she started at generous odds so he went off her as he thought something was amiss and of course she shat in..chicken n chips wrote:#Felix wrote:ElvisisKing wrote: Peterpan, ive been racing for more than 40 years.

I have long felt that the scratching of a horse in any exotic should be treated differently. The current status quo where the tote favourite becomes your replacement only favours the operator who can never lose and carries no risk. What the current rules do is force the punter to be "live" in the exotics even if he has not chosen a horse. Hawwaam the perfect example of this unfair practice.
The fair solution is to refund the affected portion of your bet. So if you bankered Hawwaam you get the full refund, and the pool is reduced accordingly. Obviously you would have to be running in your exotics at the time of scratching for this to come into effect. If a horse is scratched in a leg where you have multiple selections, then the portion the horse represents should be refunded. That is the only fair way to the punter.
Why shouldnt this happen? Because of the operators greed. I reckon if this rule were in place, more than half the p6 pool still running would have been refunded, possibly more. This would have a massive effect on profits the operator generates. Before we say its too cumbersome, the refunding of bets where horses are scratched is already in place in other bet types.

This is correct and the quartet is a good example of the refund when a horse is scratched.
