What a Classic - The SA Classic Race Day 2020
The first legs of the Triple Crown Series have been run and the winners have been nominated to take their place in the starting line up in an attempt to retain their Championship titles in the SA Classics on 7 March. While the race day embodies the friendly rivalry one has come to expect from a competitive series, it’s also one of the most family-focused race days on the calendar – making it just that… a Classic!
The SA Classic Race Day takes place on the 7th of March and hosts both the second leg of the Triple Crown (The SA Classic) and the Triple Tiara (the SA Fillies Classic) series. For those who may not be familiar with the Triple Crown series, much like its name suggests, is a series of three races run just a few weeks apart which is contested by South Africa’s best three-year-old horses (the Triple Crown for colts and geldings and the Triple Tiara for the fillies).
Whilst it may sound like a simple task considering only the most talented and athletic thoroughbreds participate, it is a series which tests the strength, stamina and heart of even the best racehorses. Winning just one leg of this series is considered an achievement and whilst winning all three is not unheard of, but it has only ever been achieved a handful of times by champions like Horse Chestnut, Louis the King and Abashiri for the colts and Igugu and Cherry on The Top in the fillies series.
The first leg of the series, the SA Guineas, was run on the 8th of February and was won by the Sean Tarry trained, Ikigai. With a name that, translated from Japanese, means “a reason for being”, Ikigai looks set to defend his title in the SA Classic. When it comes to the fillies, the first leg of the Triple Tiara, sponsored by Wilgerbosdrift Stud, the Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, was won by Summer Pudding, trained by Paul Peter and ridden by the in-form Warren Kennedy. The results of the second leg could be the decider of the series, making it a thrilling race to witness.
For race-goers, SA Classic Day is known as Family Fun Day and for good reason. Families can embrace the summer sunshine before the seasons start to change with a day out on course, a birds eye views from the grandstand and an opportunity to get close to the equine champions as they make their way around the parade ring. Making it even more appealing is the complementary entrance fee, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to share in the thrills of the day.
