@ Durbs, I agree that those are challenges that needs addressing.

Just don't throw the baby out with the dirty bath water.

Do you know how much face masks have gone up in this country?
50 used to cost R150 and now they are R850.
It's a disgrace how some companies are even trying to profit from the people when we have such a serious situation on our hands.
And as for social distancing, the majority of our workforce use minibus taxis to get to work and you know how over crowded they are.

I think I would far rather be a groom trainer jock etc than a teller in a supermarket or a Doctor or any type of worker at say Dischem(should they also close?) - Also I think FACTS should be used - Most deaths are older people(i'm just in the % that should be worried) Most grooms and jockeys are under 50 - I really don't care if we race or not BUT I do know that there are plenty of families praying that Racing continues - In South Africa we are in a very unique position in that barring KZN the rest of the country races mostly to empty tracks except on some feature days - We need balance and no panic and FACTS - Fact is most people that get this virus don't die - Unfortunately older people like myself and those born before 1970 might die if we contract it - But when kids start dying of starvation because their parents are not allowed to work then that's just stupid

We should also consider that not all people are responsible - If you are told not to come towork for a monthdoyou really think everyone's just going to sit at home waiting...The Devil finds work for Idle hands if you follow that path

Oz,NZ,Ireland,HK,Singapore and USA all first world countries and how do we expect some citizens in this country to afford masks, gloves and sanitizers when they battle to feed their own families.
Our health care is also not the best for people without medical aid so if this pandemic hits us hard plenty will perish.
We racing just to keep this industry alive as it's been corrupted so badly that if we can't race for a few months the operators will go out of business.
Money means nothing if you not on this world to use it,so safety first.

...neither does surviving this pandemic and not having money thereafter. Imagine a south african with 60% plus unemployment. One has to find a fine balance.

Countries like Taiwan and South Korea has had minimal infections by observing the restrictions I.e. sanitizing and social distancing.

If we all can do this, we can limit the damage AND still have an economy to come back to.

I would take with a pinch of Salt what Taiwan, China and Korea say

Italy have one of the best health services in the world, and reported 800 deaths yesterday (1 day)

And they have been in lock down for over a month

The UK are looking like they are going to be hit just as bad (ahead of Italy at same period)

I wouldn't trust anything that comes out of China...period.

I have colleagues in Taiwan...they're coping well.

Italy ignored the warnings, and didn't start treating people until the symptoms became severe. By then the situation was out of control and people were sent home to die. Which they did/do.

We are responding in the right way...closing down schools etc early, before it's out of control. In the hope of flattening the curve...which Italy didn't.

No matter how good your health system is, it does have it's limits. And once those limits are breached, the results are catastrophic.

According to Prof Walter Ricciardi, scientific adviser to Italy’s minister of health, the country’s mortality rate is far higher due to demographics - the nation has the second oldest population worldwide - and the manner in which hospitals record deaths.

.............

But there are other factors that may have contributed to Italy’s fatality rates, experts say. This includes a high rate of smoking and pollution - the majority of deaths have been in the northern region Lombardy region, which is notorious for poor air quality.

I have family in Udine NE Italy and my cousin was telling me that before the lock down they where told to stay at home and only go out if really necessary.
One day he had to go somewhere and he passed a small town and he said the bars where full of people. They didn't listen and look what happened.
The grocery shop in my little town are only letting 3 people in at a time now.
We must take note of their mistakes and not let it happen here.

Ya Savogna d'Isonzo close to Gorizia near the Slovenian border.
No positives in my town but one person got it in a town about 5km away.

That’s the place :-) In 2016 we went into Slovenia just for a drink and to buy cheap fags for the same auntie. I believe Slovenia has now closed that border. So much for European community.
