Was there a “13th” race?

She actually made the field look ordinary with that win. Brought back memories of Igugu and Ipi Tombe although their wins were a lot closer.

.....although the July result was favorable for me .....I was rather disappointed at the way it was run though....not blaming jockeys nor the course here but the absence of a plan to have a front runner(and not really an actual pace maker) which resulted in the scrappiest 600m I have ever seen...... with more checking than a chess championship.... half the field had their heads up as no one wanted to go forward....I actually thought they were pulling up due to a false start....then Danielson(as predicted by The Hawk) more reluctantly plods to the front and even by going 5 wide from a 5 draw and no cover looked for company and hardly broke a fast canter.....it looked like a morning work out but with18 horses on the same track....the Greyville track with a full field is not ideal for a Cape crawl....so to those clevers that gave instructions not to go to the front.... your tactics handed the race to the true master champion trainer.....

You are 100% right - there was no pace on at all except for Puerto Manzano who tried to make a race of it but got swallowed up 400m out ! It looked like a poorly run race to me like they were just plodding along and often the horses with the best 400m to final times win in these cases. I can't deny I felt disappointed at the running of the race - not for the result because any horse winning a July is something special. I was hoping for more excitement.

This years time >135 sec vs 133 last year vs132 the year before. I know conditions not comparable year on year but pace is trending poorly

I think very few people expected a true-run race with a decent pace - and luck in running was always going to play a big part - very disappointing showing by some - especially Linebacker - who drifted like a barge before the off - I expected Jet Dark, Safe Passage and Do It Again (at least backed that one each-way at 33/1 before the 1900) to be thereabouts - but I never fancied the winner at this track over a trip arguably short of her best :(

Quite a few results on the day were diabolical (to say the least) - a lot of horses running way below best imo - so well done to those that ended up in front on the day B)

Tactically De Kock and Smanga got their plan right. Sparkling Water races off them but was up with the pace and even led. Go to around 04.30 to 04.45 of the replay.

.....stayed in front most of the day with some decent longshot place bets and small swingers and odd small % trifectas in the early races....also played a PA which is very rare for me....a 20%er for just over 100 bucks and in the July small swingers places with my dogs and singled out 3 horses in the parade ring Sparking Water(based on the exuberant and confident jock) Do It again(looks) and Safe Passage(pedigree).....and boxed them for the max left over balance in swingers(which I sort of regret not leaving something for the 8th race where my intended swinger play paid 3 times more)....not being one to normally banker or go thin on the hotshots....and after the big banker goodie missed the places in the 8th my PA was now 1.6 times with 4 horses in the last....my P6 had 5 horses(went out in 1 earlier leg) the 5th horse was Sheela(not in my PA).....and I take her with the 4 horses in my PA for swingers and land up with absolutely squat(why not a place bet for cover)..... the remainder of the rather belated July swinger winnings go into a JP with Warrior banker and float Warrior in trifectas ..... ....game over.... good night nurse....:S

Captains Ransom proves once again when it come to Durban against top class milers it is not up to scratch , this has to be the most overrated horse in sa currently

Your narrow provincialism to the fore again?
5 Grade 1 wins so far in her career and prior to this race unbeaten in 5 starts this season including 3 gr 1 races. Perhaps this goat track does not suit, but last year was reported ill after the race. This year played up at the start and was given a very below par ride imho.
She klapped these same fillies on a proper galloping track at Kenilworth.
Still the best filly in the country at 1600m despite this hiccup and certainly not overrated

A very tough days racing- not too many tipsters found more than two winners out of twelve and just one strong favourite winning.
The consolation July run a second faster than the big one and even that was run at a sedate pace early on.
A great performance by Sparkling Water- a very astute ride by Khumalo, and as with all the de Kock horses, tuned up for the big occasion.
Given the false pace one must be careful in assessing performance but all of Jet Dark, Do It Again and Kommetdieding ran very well considering the weight they carried and the pace. Safe Passage carried the flag for the 3 year olds but a few pounds below the top horses at WFA but still plenty scope for improvement and he will win a few more gr1s.
Both Jet Dark and Kommetdieding are entires, but no announcements of either going to stud this season, so perhaps we will see a rematch in the 2023 Met.

I knew my fate a looong way out on Pomp And Power when i saw the pace and the way it was fighting for it's head. I liked Safe Passage on it's July gallop as it cruised up alongside Sparkling Water and Muzi had a double handful. Never even gave the winner a chance on it's July gallop and the way it looked in the canter past. Well that's the way the cookie crumbles i guess. Not even going to comment on Captain's Ransom and that ride plus the apparent pre race antics that happened and was mentioned casually by the presenters that involved Captain's Ransom and Marina allegedly.

My two bets for the day that landed me a few bob was Cousin Casey and Snow Palace and i managed to win an all to come places for a few raaant so i actually ended up with profit on the day....surprise surprise.....all the exotics paid bombs so congrats to those that got some of that.
