Maiden Handicap Races -Tote punters nightmare
2 years 6 months ago
Many punters tend to punt in maiden plate races which is considered easier to study the form. Now that the racing authorities introduced the Maiden Handicap Races, Iots of my friends avoid punting in these races.
Handicap Races are challenging for most punters with limited knowledge about racing. It's a sure way to kill racing. I wonder which idiot introduce Maiden Handicap Races with little consideration for the punt at the Tote that semi literate and only uses the 2 page Tote formguide to study.

I used to find winners in maidens where I had my best strike rates. However with maiden handicaps it makes it far more difficult. Also novice handicaps is ridiculous. Racing is constantly changing and has become nearly impossible to make money.
If I was 16 years old again,I definitely would not have gotten hooked to racing the way it is now.As a teenager I would easily find atleast 4 winners a meeting aswell as straight line p.a many times, smaller payouts but the favorites were always in the shake up. Odds on favorites used to win by 5 , nowadays the 5/10 favorites are the first horses beat with 400 to go. I also feel that in the 80s and 90s the odds were better.
Just to difficult these days and depressing tracks and fields.

Many punters have their best strike rate in maiden plate races. Generally, in the Bipot punters can find a banker in the maiden races. But the operates with minimal foresight want to make racing as difficult as possible in order for punters to lose money in racing.
Perhaps they want punters to migrate to the casinos and slot machines.
Keep it simple stupid!!! Terminate this ludicrous MAIDEN HANDICAP races.

I like the Dog racing more now.
Sometimes the dogs get checked and knocked about and there's bumping and boring but no objections. Good.
The other day witnessed a rare dog fight during the race.
Understandably the race was declared null and void.
And the superstars dogs are top performers.

This type of post makes me laugh. "Easily find 4 winners a meeting - straight line pa many times, favourites were ALWAYS in the payouts". May I respectfully put it to you Batman that you are either being economic with the truth, or your memory isn't what it used to be. I have no doubt that ON OCCASION you may have had days like you describe, but I am 1000000% sure that this was not the norm.
I have been punting for over 40 years and obviously have experienced both the Race Figure and Merit Racing systems. I can assure you that bookmakers were not poor during the Race Figure days. Pick 6 carryovers were as common as what they are now in the Race Figure Days. To really show my age, I recall Jackpot carryovers in the RF days.
I agree with you 100% that Maiden Handicaps are a travesty, but let's not fantasize about what we had before MR.

IMO a few pr!cks sat around a round table and decided how can we screw the punters at the Tote. One wise pr!ck suggested that they should create Maiden Handicap Races. All the pr!cks raised to a 'stand' in agreement.
At the Tote Maiden Handicap Race aka BEE Handicap Race. Horses don't have to win a race on ability. The operators will ensure horses with less ability out performs the better horses by handicapping them.

I honestly think the results where more favourable in the days gone past.
I don't play big but I definitely won more than I do these days, mostly the easiest bet now,the PA,and still come short most days.
In my opionion the horses where way better, just look at the poor horses running in KZN a supposedly big centre. Many less below average jocks and proper trainers who knew how to get a horse fit not like these days when they use a race as a training gallop too often and now also try and manipulate the MR because they can.

I spoke to someone at 4Racing because they are the people that made this silly decision to have Maiden Handicap Races to the detriment of their customers. They didn't execute adequate research before implementing this new concept for maiden races. 'Customer is King', give the customers what they need and not what you think the customer may want. All the punters that I have spoken to are disgruntled about Maiden Handicap Races.

Have you thought about the owners? These races provide an opportunity for battling maidens to recoup some of their expenses. If the owners didn’t like these races it wldnt be there.
There are maiden handicaps overseas too.

That's true Mac but the powers that be must understand that the easier it is to win the more people will play the horses.
They playing into the hands of the casinos, making it harder to win with these maiden handicaps and they offer the punter no incentives at all.

Did the operators consider the punters who are the key to sustaining race in this country. Owner receive their prize money from the revenue they receive from punters betting. It will be sad day when more and more punters move away from horse racing and owners winning prize money is reduced. Punters are the life blood of this game. No punters might as well close shop. At the moment if you get 50 punters going to Kenilworth on race day is a monumental achievement.

Greyville first race a Maiden Handicap Races. I'm out of the Bipot.
1st TWO MINDS 12/1
2nd SEA CRUISE 16/1
I throw my money down the drain punting in Maiden Handicap Races. Casino is now seems like a better option.
