Cape Sales 2023
2 years 5 months ago
.....well it is almost upon us and at a rather odd time/date.... as the previous CTS and the BSA forerunner sales where much closer to Met day(normally in the week before the Met)....and with the recent era of CTS regional market domination this sale was overhyped in a flashy venue and timed with the Met to pull in flush up country buyers and big overseas speculators....but it has failed to get that bigger past support from the more local breeders....now dont get me wrong there is some real quality here and even Varsfontein have finally broken their embargo of this sale and thrown them a bone with a draft.....but I now liken this event to fine dining on french cuisine with very pricy and smaller portions not catering for the bigger beef eaters as the total lots on offer is a mere 122.....and would need to generate some serious moola to cover costs of the venue(imvho not ideal for young horses) and associated staging costs...on the other hand BSA/TBA's regional sale which became a sideshow to CTS has attracted 181 lots and even Klawervlei have sent a larger draft there....this sale may not be as packed with as much quality... but is no longer a side show....

.......now reading a still over hyped article in the SP that Cape sales had cut their comm to attract a much bigger draft has not entirely given this event the required boost to further generate the much needed income stream....they now need bigger prices to get a better chop.....so we now have a smaller pond with more well equipped anglers all chasing the fewer big trophies.....maybe the Island King can go big again with his Royal plate win owners throwing their offshore moola into the local racing economy.....and a very fortunate bloodstock agent will again have his bum in the butter.....:S

The well known Mauritius racing family, Gujadhur, has horses with Crawford. He has some nice bred horses with Le Morne at the moment their best. I think he will definitely buy more with all the racing troubles in Mauritius.
The other Mauritian owner, Mr Veeramootoo, has numerous horses in South Africa, including Global Drummer, Vars Vicky and Grade 1 winner Sentbydestiny who could be retired. He is a very shrewd/astute buyer.

.....reading between the lines it looks like Ricky Maingard may be here to stay....and a misfortune in export protocol saw him get stuck here with Al Muthana.....now with this Kings Plate win he may stay and race the string of quality he snapped up at the recent RTR sale.....which he picked and not the agent who merely facilitated his buyers card and got a fat chop for the transaction/s.....but so glad that the Island King is not yet into big local punting as one is going to get some decent value on those 1st timers....that's if he can forge relationships with better but not so smart jocks

......Yes they have paid some big tom for nice horses and they step out the RTR sales topper this coming Saturday an import that they bought at the nationals for ZAR1.2BAR.....his gallop at the RTR was also very workman like but his ped may indicate that he may need further than the 1000m dash as he is up against raced runners and one with close up form to some that placed in race 3 this last Saturday....

I recon that the prices achieved at this recent sale were rather tame compared to sales of this nature in days gone by......Take the sales topper of a ZAR1.1BAR bought by offshore interests out of Mauritius that are not short of buying power. They now have one of very few imported horses that have landed up here and related to Alboran Sea.... he moved pretty well in his pre-sale gallop with a very nice fluid action....and he appears to be still growing and should furnish into a much stouter frame....he was sold on the recent NYS for ZAR1.2BAR and obviously went to Brett Crawford for conditioning and put on this sale to qualify for further stake incentives offered by this sale...and in the past many many more buy backs were the order of the day....so his price has not been inflated at all and imo now worth his initial tag....now that all can see he will make it to a race course barring any mishaps and may perform as well as his genetics indicate....the buyer had already spent his tom and is merely paying Cape Sales a small entry fee to compete in a race where he can try recoup some of his spend.....

.....sorry having a bout of old timers disease.....this ped is pure speed as the dam is a full sister to speedster Alboran Sea and sire No Nay Never a speedster himself.....we will have to see if this one has put on a bit of muscle as on the converse the real RTR speedster has shed most of his condition as Maingard may prefer a less worked lighter frame in a 2yr old.... but on Saturdays run has not affected his ability to pace it with winners....

The Cape Premier Sale at CTICC only has 122 yearlings catalogued and after withdrawals will be about 110. The horses arrived on Monday and today (Tuesday) was a busy day with plenty of viewers, with more of the trainers from KZN, PE and Gauteng expected tomorrow. The sale kicks off at 14h30 on Thursday.
I have already looked at most of the horses, and the quality is very good, despite the sale being held a couple of weeks earlier than previous years.
A recent announcement is that there will be a R1m juvenile race on Met day 2024 for graduates of this sale. The buy in for elegibility is R10k.
Our 6 from Black Swan Stud have settled in nicely and are well worth a look for those that are in the market.
