El Romiachi, the eight-year-old stalwart trained by Zietsman Oosthuizen in the Eastern Cape, achieved the impossible on Friday when completing a hat-trick in his 102nd race.
The gelded son of Elusive Fort won his 100th and 101st run before completing what surely must be a historical achievement in world racing when he demolished quite a strong field under jockey Eldin Webber.
The jockey was all smiles after the race, saying that his riding instructions from the trainer were quite simple: “Slaan voor en los agter. (Hit the front and leave the rest behind). That was the instructions,” said Webber in his postrace interview.
“And that’s exactly what I did. Well, not actually me, the horse did it all himself.”
Although El Romiachi won by 2.25-lengths, he wasn’t actually the first horse across the line.
Travel Master was first across the line, but without a jockey as he dislodged his rider, Kendall Minnie, as the gates opened.
Travel Master nevertheless kept himself handy on the outside and gave Minnie quite a scare as they hit the final 300m.
“I didn’t realise it’s a loose horse,” said Webber. “I thought it was a jockey coming for me, and I thought jeepers, here we go.”
It was only once Travel Master passed El Romiachi that Webber realised there was no threat.
“It was a courageous win for El Romiachi. He took on some big guns today and he pulled it off.
“I told Zietsman the other day this horse is at the top of his game. He’s like a youngster again, because he’s still buck. He can still buck and duck like a two-yearold.”
The trainer was obviously overjoyed at the achievement of El Romiachi and Webber.
“It’s an absolutely unreal feeling. Eldin rode a pearler,” said Oosthuizen. “Money can’t buy what we have experienced with this horse.”
The trainer also had a message for 4Racing CEO Fundi Sithebe.
“Shout out to Fundi. Two years ago, she mentioned him (El Romiachi) at the Equus awards because he was the most raced horse in one season. She said if she could give a prize to a horse at the awards, that would be her horse of the year. So, Fundi, make it count. This horse deserves an Equus award.”

As a part owner of El Romiachi i was stunned at how easy he won his last start. Zietsman and his team have worked wonders on this 8 year old and his zest for racing. Making his 103 run his 3 in a row after achieving his 100 run win was an honor which will be cherished forever.
