the internet does offer some clever technology, but no-one has yet devised a way (or a reason) to show different prices to different customers.
personal contact affords the bookie that opportunity. online they will rather show prices at which they're less exposed to risk, than prices that will generate more business.
there probably are fewer mugs online, but i guarantee you brent, hardly any will make the distinction that a loss by 14 or less is a better bet at evens than a win by 16 or more. you truly operate at the thin edge mate.

Yip I do spend alot more time on it than most which is why my previews of each match show the best book enabling punters to find the best deal without doing all the searching.
In golf for example I am often tipping Hollywood, why? Because they were one of the first layers to come out with quarter odds Top 5 and there prices are very competitive.
Not sure I get your last sentence and perhaps my original comment was not that clear
Basically I was saying that if I fancied the team on the plus and everyone had 14.5 the pair at 9/10 and World of Sport +14.5/-15.5 at 1/1 the pair then i would take the 1/1 +14.5 with WOS (same bet better price). If I fancied the minus I would rather take the -14.5 at 9/10 with the other bookmaker than the -15.5 at 1/1 with WOS - others may prefer the 1/1 though.
The beauty of the Internet is that it gives you the choice and you can compare prices and handicaps easily.
South Africa is a great place to be a punter at the moment

Interesting post ;
There are a number of facets to this issue and the first thing you need to do is differentiate between horse and sports betting.
In the matter of horse betting bookmakers have successfully forced me out of the play. Silly boys - I'm a pretty shitty horse punter so you shot yourselves in the foot big time with your 'Ha ha hee hee - let them take 140%+' approach. Furthermore - there must be some inordinately impatient and challenged punters out there as the claims will attest.
The other problem in South Africa is the incredibly thin nature of the market insofar as BIG horse players is concerned. It does not take long to figure out that the usual suspects will turn up for the De Kock hottie or well bred Woodruff first timer etc. Consequently I guess that pricing factors this 'non form issue' in as well until the market 'settles'.
On the other hand the market is unlikely to price up 125% on a rugby game despite the fact that it might know that Mr X will come for Team Y irrespective. By making Team Y too short the corollary is that the opposition ends up too big - which could have catastrophic implications. In racing they are just keeping EVERYTHING too short. So betting on horses has become like buying ALL your groceries at a Quick Stop - you stick yourself out on the pricing.
The other very important issue which didn't even get a mention was GETTING ON. Many of the outlets will not even lay a bet despite advertising a price. They feed you the usual claptrap varying from 'The price was taken earlier' to 'We forgot to update the site'. So if, as I often do, you want to go in fat you need to find someone to accomodate you!
But then let's face it - half the fun is hearing the thud on the other end of the line when you ask for a 'bar' of whatever your fancy might be!
Now go club some seals, guys.............

Nice one Garrick, I like the thought of having a strong bookies ring again at the track and you ask for an even bar on the fav, and without looking up, he writes the ticket then goes 11/10.
This probably happens in Zim?

I've said for over a year - a person that as Dave says 'takes a bet' without batting an eyelid - or even 'pushing the price out!' We make a 'lot' of money in the long run!
Fav's only win 35% of the time = MUST ultimately win!
If I ever get a shedload of moolah, I'll do it - lol!

I know they don't quote the tie in ODI's and T20 matches (although some quote the tie in a 5 match series) but i would love to know the odds of both T20 semi finals ending in ties within minutes of each other.
Thank goodness for picture in picture on my tv - what entertainment

Did anyone out there win or lose money on the two events?
I have two bookies that don't want to settle on the Cobras on the grounds that it was a tie.

Mmm. This should only happen if they quoted the tie as an option in the market. At World of Sport, for example, the rule states:

When a match is tied then top batsmen and totals bets shall stand. Match bets are void and stakes will be returned unless tie betting is quoted or the tournament rules include an additional method of determining the match winner, i.e. Duckworth/Lewis (D/L) method, "bowl out" etc.

Interesting that they have different rules - to me the logical conclusion would have been no tie quoted then both sides refunded.
I wonder how it works amonst the bookies who may have taken back with each other if they have different rules. E.g WOS take the Cobras with BX - they have to pay their punters in terms of their rules but don't get anything for their "punt'

My understanding has always been
say 9/10, 9/10 and 25/1 the draw after regulation time. result settled.
or outright winner only 2 options, result settled.
These days with the "in-running" option betting would re-open for a tie breaker or sudden death.
imo
