Sean I agree with you 100% and believe you were robbed. Unfortunately it is not the bookies at fault here as they paid out on who they were told was the "offical" winner. I can see some serious law suits coming out of this fiasco against both MNET and Alexander Forbes. Sean I certainly feel for you and anyone else who backed Jason as you had the winner but lost.

My personal feeling is that the hosts of idols were under pressure to have the first "non-white" winner of idols in South Africa and didn't anticipate the furor that was created by the Jason fans after the shock result...

Irrespective of network errors and whatever other excuses they wish to use it is unbelievable to accept that 200000 more Jason votes were delayed in comparison with those of Sasha's.

Makes a mockery of the whole process...

I dont expect the bookies to pay out unless they could recoup costs from mnet or AF, which I dont expect will happen.

Obviously I'm speaking from my pocket, but money aside its disgraceful.

I truly feel sorry for both Sasha and Jason, he will never get the moment back on stage where he was to be crowned the winner, and the entire competition has been tarnished by the declaration of 2 winners...

If this was the first SA idols competition help, then possibly they could hide behind feeble excuses...

shrek says : "I can see some serious law suits coming out of this fiasco against both MNET and Alexander Forbes"

If the bookies gets burnt, then they deserve to. Once again making a book on a competition that does not belong to them, or where they have no "cost of sales", like they do in racing. What are they going to sue for?

SeanG says" My personal feeling is that the hosts of idols were under pressure to have the first "non-white" winner of idols in South Africa?

So Karen and Jody were white?

Hi Sharkie I am not talking about bookies, they have paid out on Sasha Lee and can't and shouldn't be expected to pay out on Jason as well. If a race is taken away from a Formula driver 3 weeks later in the courtroom the bookies don't pay out everyone who backed the second driver and recover money from people who backed the original winner.

There were 2,4 million votes cast at R1,50 each this is R3,6 million. Surely if the votes do not count the money people spent voting in the final should be refunded. What about everyone who sponsored prizes, a car a recording contract, vouchers plus more all to the winner. Now there are two winners, do they both get a car or do they share the one car.

Why have a competition if there is a clear cut winner and you declare a tie. It is impossible for Jason to have had over 200,000 less votes on Sunday night.

Shrek your points on the voting are spot on, there is no way in my opinion the discrepancy could have been that big unless the bungle is worse than they are letting on and they are just spinning a story hoping people will buy it and move on.

Sharkie I do not share your view of the bookmakers. At the end of the day they are sticking their necks out on a market which frankly they know little about and for which their was an interest from the public.I for one am fascinated by the odds in these events.

Their motivation is probably publicity in these novelty markets and I believe they add value by creating interest, I can recall Gareth Cliff referring to the bookmakers a couple of times during the show.

Hard lines to those who punted Jason but there is no way they (the bookies) should take the knock for this. Having said that I know what Paddy Power would do in this situation, they would pay out Jason bets, take the knock and pick up some serious positive publicity.

Any local bookmakers prepared to do likewise?

Disagree with the non white comment. Jody (idols 4 winner) non white. Karen previous season non white.

This is not a race issue its a technical cock up. I cant wait for the day when people in SA stop using race as an excuse or solution for everything!

JET !
Bookies will pay on podium finish,in other words Sasha won on the night, therefore she would be deemed the official winner for betting purposes.Same story a few years back in MOnaco woth the F1 ,Barichello ( hope spelling is right ) let M Schumacher throught to win the race ,but Schumacher made Barichello stand on the number 1 podium, guess who got paid those that backed Barichello. So you see Jason may be deemed the joint winner a few days later but the betting rules are quite clear.
And Scotia i agree with you mate...only in Africa
