one trainer said "take it easy, only fools rush in and stick to the maidens". for me the excitement of backing a winning horse (especially if the price is good) is far greater than that of betting a winning team....

If you really want to play on the horses, then as a beginner may I suggest that you play straight place bets, all to come place bets and swingers.
This will definitely give you a much better return for you investment than any bank in SA.

Have not been checking the tote returns, however today as far as places

3 horses returned 1.20 (1/5)
1 horse retuned 1.10 (1/10)
5 horses returned 1.00 ( yes nothing, so you took a bet with the chance of only getting your stake back and a chance to lose your stake to gain nothing)

so beware of playing tote places

swingers are the worst value bets possible. Rather take exactas, much better returns

Charles punt what you can and don't mind losing. If you're new to the game then it'll be hard to make sense of the results at times but remember there are so many factors at play : jockeys, trainers, grooms, owners, conditions nevermind how the horse itself is feeling. I've been involved for as long as I can remember and am probably down over the years, however I love the sport and it's my fix in life.

On the flipside sports betting is even better and in particular the Super 14, Crusaders can't miss this year so 3/1 to win the event is my gift to you.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Took a bet on the Lakers to beat Memphis last night in NBA. Got 0.75 on them which is pretty decent for the defending champs vs a non-playoff team. Obv they go down by 2 :(

Took a PA and some small win bets at Vaal today so will see how that goes.
