Exactly Pirates, rumour has it that Mr Plattner has found himself another lass and is putting huge pressure on to close the yard. My personal opinion is that Crawford did not do a great job but now that he has taken out his own licence we will see in the future what he is made of.

Shayne Welman you seem to forget 1 thing, THE YOGAS (as you like to call him) was left with a full string of horses. Every horse that Brett was training was left to him the day he left. Dont get me wrong, Im not saying Yogas is a bad trainer, what Im trying to say is you cannot put Michael in the same basket as Yogas.......... Do you think Basil decided to leave his better horses here in SA and take his 2nd string to Singapore??

Harris, Ive worked with Brett, trust me no one is more professional than him.

Ive worked with both these guys and believe me you 2 have picked the wrong 2 trainers to knock. Lets see who's right at the end of their 1st FULL season.

I like Brett, but the Brett that started the Plattner yard and the one that left seems poles apart. Whatever the reason, by the end the yard hardly got a runner into a graded race. They Cape Town facility is top class so there's no excuses from that department. Even with ordinary horses Brett got unbelievavble form out of them in the beginning, everything was backed and won. By the end, the yard must be losing fortunes.

Hopefully Brett can built a yard for himself, although I think things have become tougher at the top. Both Bass and Kannemeyer have fine-tuned there big race styles and prep.

It's complete nonsense to evaluate De beer after 4 weeks. Everyone needs a moment to get into a rhythm, find their feet and make minor adjustments when they take over the wheel from someone else.

Jack Dash,

Nice post. I agree with you on Bretts results not being the same as they were when he first took over. Personally I think that when Brett took over Mrs P was buying horses bred in the purple in SA and all over the world. (Aus, South America). Not only that, her mares were all going to the likes of Fort Wood, Western Winter, Jet Master, Jallad etc etc. Then she bought Lizard Island who unfortunately only raced once (Stand under correction) and was sent to her stud farm to stand as her own stallion. Most of her mares were sent to him as Mrs P obviously wanted the best for her stallion. Now lets be honest, apart from a few nice horses LI hasnt exactly set the world a light with his progeny especially when you have 2 barns full of them. Bretts training tactics that were used on Angus, Lasserfaire, (that big black stayer, name escapes me) never ever changed. The only thing that changed was the quality of horses he was training. Brett like Michael have got some real good people behind them and I know that these 2 guys will make top trainers in the Cape in years to come.

At the end the Fort Woods, Jet Masters and National Assemblys etc etc were also struggling, but this could also have been down to unlucky buying. Methinks, though, that the real weak link in the whole set up is the stud. It doesn't produce top horses - by any stallion. Hardly the trainer's fault!

Lets watch his runners today....and hopefully the wheel will start turning....most of the top horses from the yard are gone and now the time for the 2nd tier left behind to rise up.

Just one other point, Platner has run about 25 Lizard Island's of which 50% have already won and include Favourite Island, Jamaican Dream and Quick As Lizard, all multiple winners. While Liz Island isn't a success, for their racing yard he wasn't a complete failure and a 50% win rate is better than most.

Considering Michael took over a fully functioning stable i too thought the stable would continue to do well for about a month until things slowed down a bit, i agree stables have lows, David Ferraris a multiple champion trainer in SA has had just 1 win from his last 130 runners in Hong Kong !? For those of you that don't know, Michael was champion apprentice, he also rode in Macau with great success, he has travelled with horses to Australia, Singapore, England and Japan for the Hong Kong master the late Ivan Allan. Give him some time and he will get his regular winners, he has the background to survive.

12 stakes earners from last 30 runners - many stables would love to be at that level after a month - very stiff not to have a winner with scent of success as the horse tried it's best not to earn - Don't know the man and have never spoken to him or connection to his yard so unbiased view

People also forget that after a quietish start to the season Basil was really flying during the summer. Hap plenty of winners and many now are in their place.
