@hibernia:
I am prepared to testify for Smiley's re-appointment against the background of the industry's history of marginalising and victimising 'misfits' or 'problematics' without raising the race card per se.
In fact, I also did intervene, had a meeting to find common ground and an amicable solution (with no mud slinging!)...but no feedback! That is consistent with Phumelela's attitude and operation.

I'm in favour of his re-appointment because I think he's a very good caller, he has a big following, and there is a shortage of commentators in Gauteng anyway. Race has less than nothing to do with it, in my book, but if he coincidentally happens to satisfy some quota system, that's just a bonus.

He was on Carte Blanche not so long ago (I think)
The Team That Never Played - I wish that they had the video clip up. You must see how this guy moved (at 60) in this article done by Carte Blanche. He would probably (in his 60's) still run rings around myself and some of the guys that play in our social side.
beta.mnet.co.za/carteblanche/Article.aspx?Id=4011&ShowId=1
My only comment is that if Smiley Moosa had played in todays times,
a. he probably would not have needed a commentating job later in life other than for a hobby and
b. in 20 years he would have companies such as Phumelela bashing down his door.
Imagine Bryan Habana took a shine to race commentating in 20 years from now. The offers would not stop from P, even if he was only slightly talented at it.
Here is a man that has been let down by a system that excluded him from national honours and in todays times he continues to be excluded. Very sad state of affairs. He would have been a national hero had he been born at a different time.
