He rides at 54 doesn't he - a kilo overweight would not have been a train smash imo - but maybe the owners see it differently

Nice to see J Lloyd riding R Jetez in the July, cant keep them away when our big races arrive.I believe the mighty Pocket Power has got it all to do from that horrible draw, pity but would love to see this great competitor pullout all the odds and win.Im personally leaning on to Bold Silvano,as i think Mike De Kock holds a strong hand in our July once again.

Pocket Power has a lovely draw as far as I am concerened. If he was drawn 1 -10 he would have started fair and dropped back through the field anyway and left it all to do at the end as he did last year and the year before and the year before that. For me Bernard will have to have him awake from the opening of the gates which could work in the champs favour.
Watching the Champs Cup tells me Bold Silvano is going to be the 3 year old to beat in this race. He finished like a horse with his tail on fire and it almost seemd like the jockey was over showing his hand in the race. Jock seemed almost suprised by how close he came to the front 3 and had there been 100 meters more he would been a hell of a lot closer and maybe would have won this race. (just an opinion)
I was not too excited by the last runs of Irish Flame nor Fort Vogue - I am happy to be wrong on this. I suppose a word of warning is that Anton takes rides with a winning chance. KB satble jock
River Jetez has been consistantly good this KZN season and I would love to see Jeff Lloyd win this race.
Lizarre - horses for courses and with Strydom anything is possible
Russian Sage is due a big race
It would be a good one for Michael De Beer and Adam Marcus to shock SA with a Red Rake win - Home ground advantage for Sturgeon - Aren't we due a Dunford type of result.
Lastly, Muzi is really a jock for the future and it would be great for him to make a huge name for himself in this race. Home ground advantage too.
However it turns out, its days like these that make racing great. It showcases the sport to a whole new group of people. I am sure many are converted into punters after having a winning ticket on the July.

Al, I agree on some points, but not on others.
A bad draw is a bad draw (and yes in last year's race it did not seem to play such a big part - depends on the pace I suppose) and I think that Mike Bass wouad have been much happier had PP drawn 7 instead of 17. He is also worse off at the weights with his 'baby' sister on the Met run. He will always remain a champion, but under the conditions of this race, coupled with his poor draw, I would not be surprised if he were to run unplaced.
I agree on Bold Silvano - probably has improved more after his 2nd to Irish Flame and to me has a definite winning chance, along with Orbison.
I also agree on Irish Flame (but he should still be thereabouts) and Fort Vogue (but he may still not have been 100% tuned for the race this past weekend when beaten by Flying Tristam).
River Jetez won the Met off almost the same weight terms; Fort Vogue is now a kilo better off for a length beating so there should not be much between the two and FV has a few lenghts to find with Flying Tristam on their last run.
Yes Lizarre is a course specialist, but lacks the class imo - and he has the worst draw - not for me.
Russian Sage, not sure if he is really back to his best - would be a factor, but I have some doubts about the 2200.
Red Rake now runs for de Kock, so could improve, but 2200?
So I like Bold Silvano, but if Orbison stays the 2200 (and he may just do that being out of a Foveros mare and having won easily over 2000 earlier), I think he could be the right one, with Flying Tristam (pity abouth the draw) also a huge runner imo.
All will be revealed come 31 July!
Just a word on the Zimbabwean challenger who did not make the final field - imo this was the correct decision - they should have brought him to KZN earlier (I know there was some cock-up with travelling from Zim) but I suppose he would then not have been able to win those big races in Zim and if he did not win these races, they may not even have considered the July - so a real catch 22. Would have been nice to see him run though, and perhaps it is worthwhile considering having emergency acceptors for the race, should something go wrong with any of the carded runners?

Cheers Pirates - I am sure that Adam can claim a certain amount of credit if RR does well.
As far as pace is concerned MDK has enough amo in the field to ensure that he gets the pace he wants for his front line attack. Red Rake is a game front runner who will probably set the tempo early on. MDK has made his feelings on slow run SA races known on a few occasions of late so the rest of the field better be fit and ready because they are going to need to run and stay every yard of the Greyville 2200.
I have missed many an opportunity to win on Pocket Power. In fact I probably have only backed him once and had him in many other multiples. Perhaps on 31 July 2010 I will be paid back for my unwillingness to back a short priced winner. At 15/1 I cant get hurt.
