Have a laugh and dig deep for charity
14 years 10 months agoThe Foundation bred a horse called Shark Attack. Below is all the details. The Sharks own 25 % and there is still some shares available which will be put on sale on the night of the comedy show.
The trainer is Bart Rice of Ashburton and the Summerveld Equine Hospital will take care of all vet bills and treatment…
Shark Attack will race in the Sharks colours and all proceeds on selling shares of this racing career will go towards the NRFT.
SHARK ATTACK TURNS 2!
BRIEF BACKGROUND INFORMATION
During 2006, the Summerveld Equine Hospital donated a Thoroughbred Mare to the NRF, the sole aim to raise funds in some way using her. After an attempt was made to have her trained for racing, it was decided that she would be a better broodmare due to her age. Negotiations took place between various role players and she was finally sent to Cape Town for covering by Stallion, Casey Tibbs who is standing at the Hemel en Aarde Stud in Hermanus. She was returned to Summerveld Equine Hospital during early 2007 and the foal arrived on 23 November 2008.
On the 9th of December 2008 at the Summerveld Equine Hospital, the NRF arranged a small event celebrating the arrival of the foal. Many guests attended this function and it was on this day, that Keegan Daniel, Sharks Player, was given the task of naming the foal. This is how SHARK ATTACK came about!
After the ceremony, Shark Attack and his mother, Far and Away, were taken to Roski Stud, where they lived together under the special care and attention of Stud owner and breeder, Greg Royden-Turner.
Shark Attack is a “late” foal, which means that he is at least 3 months younger than his peers, but this did not stand in his way in any way. Far and Away proved to be a very good, caring mother and she protected her boy with all she had. At first, mother and baby had a huge paddock to themselves, but as the time went by, they shared paddocs with other mares and babies. Soon, Shark Attack learnt to fend for himself as he grew up to be a fine young colt, with a lovely nature but with the typical attitude one would expect from a Shark!
Shark Attack was separated from his mother when he was about 6 months old and she retired at Zimbali Coastal Resort, where she is still standing today. Shark Attack stayed behind at Roski Stud until he was ready to take the next leap in his life.
On Monday 21st June 2010, Shark Attack was taken to Ambleway Spelling Farm, just South of Pietermaritzburg, where he will spend the next few months at “prep-school” with other young horses under the care of owner, Jane Trotter.
Although Shark Attack’s actual birth date was in November, he will officially be 2 years old on the 1st of August 2010, which is the birth date of all race horses.
BREEDING/BLOODLINE DETAILS
FAR AND AWAY is by perennial successful Stallion, FAHAL out of the Broodmare CIVIL AFFAIR who is by multiple Champion Stallion, NORTHERN GUEST.
HOW IT HAPPENED
To make this all possible, we needed the help and support from various role players, and I will now list them (in no particular order) to indicate how it all came about:
1. Summerveld Equine Hospital – donated the Mare – Far and Away aka Sally Anne, to the NRF. (2006)
2. Mark and Dorrie Sham - New Turf Carriers, was responsible for her save transport from Durban to Cape Town, and back. (2007/2008)
3. The Stallion Service (Casey Tibbs) was donated by Klavervlei Stud – John Koster. (2007)
4. Far and Away was looked after by David-Hepburn Brown, (Hemel en Aarde Stud - Hermanus) until it was time to be visited by Casey Tibbs and a few months after the covering, she was sent back to KZN.
5. The covering took place under supervision of Dr Sally Waddingham at Hemel en Aarde Stud, Hermanus.
6. Far and Away was sent back to Summerveld during March 2007 after David was satisfied that she could travel back to KZN.
7. Summerveld Equine Hospital has looked after her since and the foal is due to arrive around the 25th of November 2008.
8. Greg Royden-Turner of Roski Stud, Nutfield,, KZN Midlands, will be preparing the mare and foal for the Sibaya Sales in 2009.
9. Together with Greg and his wife Shelly, we decided to send the mare, Far and Away for the Mare Sales at Sibaya in July 2009, but keep Shark Attack at Roski Stud until he could grow up to be sent to the 2010 Yearling Sales.
10. Lots of work and preparation went into getting Far and Away ready for the 2009 Sibaya Mares Sale, but unfortunately, she went through the sale “unsold” so she retired gracefully at Zimbali Coastal Resort.
11. Shark Attack remained at Roski Stud for another year and on 21 June 2010, he was relocated Jane Trotter at Ambleway Spelling Farm, just outside of Pietermaritzburg, to commence his racing career.
12. Bart Rice will be training him.
13. The Sharks own 25 % shares and he will race in the Shark Colours.
14. Summerveld Equine Hospital will take care of all his medical requirements for the duration of his racing career.
15. Shares to be made available on 29 July 2010 at the annual NRFT Comedy Night.
THE FUTURE
Shark Attack will remain at Ambleway until Jane is satisfied with his progress. He will then go to a trainer who will officially train him for his racing career. Watch this space for the next chapter of Shark Attack!
Kind regards
