Would guess Canford could be a "cert"
Hannon double boosts Canford bid for Sussex
THE chances of Canford Cliffs eclipsing Rip Van Winkle in Wednesday's Sussex Stakes received a boost when trainer Richard Hannon saddled a double on the first day of Glorious Goodwood.
Hannon, in the winner's enclosure with Zebedee and Martyr on Tuesday, unleashes the apple of his eye, who justified his lofty reputation with exciting wins in the Abu Dhabi Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes, but takes on older opposition for the first time in this Group 1 contest.
Hannon sent out 20-1 chance Reel Buddy to win the Sussex in 2003, but Canford Cliffs will be a hot favourite this time.
Quoted on his website, Hannon said: "Canford Cliffs is odds-on, so the pressure is that much greater. However, he has done everything right at home since Royal Ascot, and I must say that he looks magnificent.
"He has improved physically - he is bigger and stronger and we don't see the Goodwood undulations being a problem as he settles so much better than he did at Newmarket on Guineas day.
"He hadn't really come to himself then, but now he is at the top of his game, and, while ideally they will go a good gallop as it would help him relax, if they do go slow - as Hughesie [Richard] says - there isnot a colt in Europe who can quicken like he can."
His main rival will be the Aidan O'Brien-trained Rip Van Winkle, who is attempting to become the first horse to win the Sussex Stakes twice.
He will be ridden by British champion jockey Ryan Moore, who is deputising for the suspended Johnny Murtagh.

Hannon concerned by Canford's Sussex draw
RICHARD HANNON has expressed concern about the draw for Canford Cliffs in this afternoon's Sussex Stakes, with the dual Group 1 winner handed the widest berth in stall one.
The odds-on favourite now faces six rivals in the race after Beacon Lodge was ruled out on Wednesday morning through lameness, and Hannon is hoping that the there will no be problems with the Ballydoyle pacemakers, who are in the adjacent stalls.
Quoted on his website, the trainer said: "My jaw dropped when I saw that we were drawn one, and it sunk even further when I spotted that Beethoven and Encompassing, the second and third string for Ballydoyle, were in stalls two and three.
"Rip Van Winkle is in the clear in stall seven, and I hope that there won't be any funny business. We have no option but to rein back from that draw, but I won't be happy if I see Joseph O'Brien and Colm O'Donoghue doing the same. Our fellow is in great form, and we just want a fair race."
