TIME WARP OR BLOODBATH?

Someone wound back the video big time on the first evening of the National 2 Year Old Sale.

With an average of around R32,000 per lot its going to take some creative accounting to justify being in the breeding business after this bloodbath. Only Dynasty and Silvano prevented the sale from returning pretty dire figures.

But as they say - for every victim there is a victor and chances are that someone has walked off with an unfashionable colt or filly for R10,000 which may shortly turn out to be a star.

If you have felt intimidated by the long string of noughts behind the price of yearlings in recent years then I suggest you hot foot it down to Germiston for the last two days and seek out a bargain. Hell - you can buy a horse for little more than the cost of 1 month's training fee.

A nameless wag was quick to observe the absence of many/most of the local trainers. Then speculated slyly that perhaps they were missing because settling was still outstanding from the National Yearling Sale..........hmmmmmmmm.

From TBA

Day one of the 2010 Emperors Palace National 2 Year Old Sale ended on a low, with the aggregate (R4 080 000) down from last year (R8 820 000).
At the same time in the Northern Hemisphere, Arqana, the French sale company that bills its Deauville yearling auction as the “sales paradise”, partly due to the colourful culture and sun of the Normandy beachside, recorded larger-than-anticipated declines across the board when the select portion of the sale began. Turnover tumbled by 40 percent compared to 2009 figures. Breeders around the world are finding these times challenging.
Of the 125 two-year-olds on sale, 76 were sold, whilst 22 were withdrawn and 27 not sold. At the end of the first day, the average for the sale was R53 684.
The first day of the three day sale was topped by Taipan, a Dynasty colt purchased by Dean Kannemeyer for R350 000.
Fourteen lots sold for six figures, and the progeny of top sires Dynasty and Silvano were particularly sought after.
Day two sees a number of attractively bred youngsters on offer. Lot 141, named Baby Jet, is a daughter of champion sire Jet Master from the immediate family of recent Gr3 Final Fling winner A Daughters Legacy.
Varsfontein offer lot 187, a colt by Jet Master out of Love On The Run. The colt is a half-brother to former top juvenile filly Dash for Gretna, and on pedigree alone is worth a closer look. This is the powerful Let Kiss family, responsible for such stars as Leopard Strike, National Title and Lucky Find.
Rosedene Stud offer lot 198. A daughter of champion sprinter and leading juvenile sire Var, the filly is out of own sister to recent Gr3 Winter Derby winner Cree Lodge. This is the immediate family of champion Hidden Fortune and his Gr1 Gold Cup winning half-brother Stateway.
There has been much excitement surrounding the prospects of lot 217. Named Jackson, the colt is by boom sire Dynasty from the wonderful international family of No Class, responsible for such champions as Sky Classic and Dance Smartly, as well as local sires Sail From Seattle, Surging River and the ill fated Strike Smartly. This is also the family of Smart Strike, sire of 2010 Preakness Stakes winner Lookin At Lucky.
Spring Valley Stud (as agent) offer lot 235. A daughter of Kahal, responsible for three individual gr1 winning fillies last season, she is a half-sister to Gr3 winner Dance At Daylight. Her dam is a half-sister to champion Warning Zone, a stakes winner in the USA.

14 August 2010
The second day of the Emperors Palace National 2 Year Old Sale has seen a Jet Master top proceedings. The handsome colt, a half-brother to Fillies Nursery winner Dash For Gretna, was sold R375,000 and is currently the top priced horse on the sale. Consigned by Varsfontein, who have a particularly attractive draft this year, the colt, named Prince Igor, was sold to Patrick Kalil.
Var’s progeny continue to be popular. The Milkwood Stud consigned filly Bonne Chance, a very flashy individual, sold for R150,000. Out of a seven time winning mare, Bonne Chance was knocked down to Gavin Smith.
Two colts have made R140 000 apiece. A striking Mogok colt, consigned by Bosworth Stud was knocked down to Connie Brooks (who is a big supporter of the sire). Named Calvero, the colt is out of the Laughing Linda. His half-sister, Winning Ways, was a smart juvenile who was 2nd in the SA Fillies Nursery.
Another colt to fetch R140 000 was Going Postal. A son of the proven international sire Black Minnaloushe, Going Postal is out of the Gr3 winning mare I’m Like Hello. Also consigned by Varsfontein, he was purchased by Alistair Gordon.
