Emerald Cup Weights
14 years 9 months ago
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited
Last year’s winner, Phunyuka, has been allotted top weight for this year’s Grade 2 Emerald Cup to be run over 1450m on the sand track at the Vaal Racecourse on Saturday 25 September.
There were no supplementary entries for the Grade 2 race but there are 36 formidable nominations for the race.
Phunyuka is one of four runners from the Roy Magner yard to be nominated for the race. Magner has also entered talented filly Cinnamon Sugar, Eastern Cobbler and Fuzzy Cuzzy. At this stage Phunyuka has been given 57kg but all that could still change. The rules for the race state: ``Should the top weight be less than 60 kg at the time of declarations it will be raised to that level and all other weights raised accordingly.’’
At this stage Cinnamon Sugar, who has won five of her six starts on the Vaal sand, has been given 53.5kg but she will probably carry more than that on the day.
Mike de Kock has entered three runners – Braggadacio, Storm Crossing and Immelman – and will no doubt be reasonably happy that Storm Crossing who won the August Stakes by 6.25 lengths, is pretty well weighted with 53kg to shoulder at this stage.
Final declarations take place on Wednesday 15 September at 11am and there will be a live draw on the evening of Wednesday 15 September.

At these weights and on his last win I think Storm Crossing will be very competative!
Wish the hot cross bun boys luck as well!!!

Storm Crossing an absolute shoe-in off these weights - why would his MR not have gone up after his last win?

Al Felon won't make the final field; these weights are not 'wrong', they have been set to a benchmark of 52kg = 96; however, the top weight will be raised to 60kg at declaration time (and all other weights raised accordingly) as published in the conditions of the race.

Storm Crossing won't carry less than 56 kgs, as per Frodo's explanation above, and nothing will carry less than 52 kgs. I guess they have not yet finalised the weights (with a top weight of 60 kgs) in case there are still supplementary entry stages? That's the only reason I can see why the current weights are the way they are, but don't be misled by them!

If Phunyuka runs (which seems certain) he will carry top weight of 60, and Sayadaw will carry 59.5 - if for some reason Phunyuka does not run, Sayadaw will carry top weight of 60

I meant Storm Crossing won't carry less than 56 provided no horse rated higher than those already entered is supplemented and accepts. But bottom weight won't be less than 52 regardless.

Magic, I was not actually referring to your post(
) (by the way supplementary entries closed on Monday 6 Sep)
I was merely trying to show Zesto that Sayadaw will not be carrying 56.5
