I was quite perplexed with his run. Last time up the straight he was cool and calm and settled at the back. Today he was very keen and I saw shades of his half brother What a Question. He was never happy around the turn but still ran a poor second.
I am certain that is the end of him over distances more than 1200m for now. I still think he is a champ and will prove it once back up the straight.
Any comments ?

he is a sprinter for now but he had to be tried over further because of the upcoming 3yo features that are over further especially the cape guineas...nothing ventured nothing gained...i would have liked mr bass to at least put a pacemaker in the race and maybe waw would have settled better ...

Plenty of 1200m types have won the Guineas. Capt Al, Bushmanland, Ethnocentric, (Pointing North?) are types who won the 1600m as very good horses can do at early 3, while there staying peers may not be quite ready.
In fact, I would think it's 'easier' to win the (Cape Dec) Guineas with a strong 1200m horse (or a horse that can do the tough Kenilworth 12) than to get a staying type ready for a hard Gr1 mile in December in CT. Sometimes that Ken12 type of horse can run well in the Cape Guineas, but wouldn't be able to do the KZN Guineas a few months later. If memory serves me for an example, Capt Al took CT guineas, and The Sheik took the Derby and then the KZN Guineas. Capt Al went back to 12 for Merchants success.
I wouldn't write off What A Winter quite yet on 1 run around the bend. This is a game best played with a little patience at least.

He will be back. Don't write him off. Bring him back down the straight and change the jockey. He will prove what a champ he is.
Hope he came out the race ok. All the best to the connections.

What a Winter failed to settle...that much was clear....as a consequence he did not have the same "kick" at the end. I believe he will definitely get 1400 and possibly 1600 however that is debatable. He will be a force over the sprints but let's not forget Castlethorpe who looks like a serious racehorse too.
The horse to follow though must be Tales of Bravery.
