WHAT A WINTER - WHAT NEXT ?
14 years 8 months ago
I concur with all who have praised his performance today. I cannot remember a horse starting his career in such phenomenal style. Empress Club is the only one that comes to mind. Horse Chestnut did get beaten in his second start.
Having a guess, I would say Mike will put him in the Matchem over 1400m followed by the Selengor Cup and Guineas.
I am sure Bernard will get the ride when he returns form injury. The last time I saw Karl Neisius so excited at the winning line was when he won the Guineas on Express Way. I reckon he must have got a buzz alright. Forty years riding horses and to sit on one better than all the rest ! Wow

just seen replay, impressive! I had a look at the breeding on formgrids to check for any relations, the half-brother was extremely mediocre, which just adds to the mystery of breeding for me, different sires I know, but so far apart on ability? (or is it just pot luck).

I'm not too sure that Mike Bass thinks the horse will stay 1600m. I haven't spoken to him about it myself, but I've heard via one of the stable's long time owners that 1400m may be as far as they reckon What A Winter will go. His half brother What A Question was also best in the 1200/1400m range, but he would be something if he does in fact get the 1600m.

a horse can only win, but in most cases it is the manner in which he does. Spoke to the breeders in the week and they were telling me how excited Mike was about the horse and proceeded to take their double on the day.

If i remember correctly What A Question's running style was totally the opposite to What A Winter's style. WAQ used to tear off to the front, whereas WAW seems to be laid back and relaxed, so imo a mile will definately be within his reach.
In saying this i'm not suggesting that i believe he'll be most effective over that distance.
