Peermont & Emperors Palace to sponsor Charity Mile again
14 years 10 months ago
THE Charity Mile, which brings together top racehorses and famous people in aid of charity, has become one of the highlights of Phumelela’s Spring-Summer Feature Race Season and will be sponsored by Peermont and Emperors Palace for the second year running.
Emperors Palace Chief Operating Officer Bob Yearham said: “On behalf of the Peermont Group and Emperors Palace I am especially delighted that for the second year in succession we are the principal sponsor of Charity Mile. Our association with this race goes back a number of years and we look forward to this year’s event being even more special than last year - and hope in years to come that every Charity Mile becomes an occasion not to be missed.’’
The Grade 2 race, formerly the November Handicap and one of the most famous races on the Johannesburg racing calendar, will be run over 1600m at a day-night meeting at Turffontein on Saturday 6 November, when it will spearhead an action-packed 10-race card that includes four other feature races.
The Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile is a unique event in which the 16 runners compete for the R600,000 stake as normal, but each also races on behalf of a charity with the finishing positions determining how much each charity receives.
Phumelela’s General Manager Marketing and Communications Robert Garner said: “This is a wonderful event that brings celebrities, horseracing, Peermont and Emperors Palace together for the benefit of charity. There’s going to be something for everybody at the meeting with superb racing and great between-races entertainment.”
Peermont and Emperors Palace give a total of R550,000 towards the charities, none of which leaves the racecourse empty-handed. The charity represented by the winner will bank a whopping R100,000 with R70,000 for second, R50,000 for third and R40,000 for fourth with the charities of the last five horses past the post each getting R20,000.
Sixteen charities, 12 associated with Peermont, have already been chosen. They are the Peermont Children’s Trust and 12 of its After-Care Centres - Monde Primary School, Reahile Primary School (five schools), Thembakazi Primary School, Nageng Primary School, Fortune Kunene Primary School, Jongimfundo Primary School, Umkhathize Primary School(three schools), Welamlambo Primary School, Khangazile Primary School, Maphanzela Primary School, Mogobeng Primary School and Iziboko Primary School. The other charities already identified are the Highveld Horse Care Unit, the Animal Anti-Cruelty League and San Michele.
Each runner has a sponsor and will be publicly represented by a celebrity. Eleven celebrities have already been confirmed:

It is the small details that are almost always reported incorrectly that gets to me, or the inaccurate representation of facts....
It hasn't been Radio 5 for years.... It is 5FM and Jen Su is hardly a mainstay of the station, she has a small weekly say on Gareth Cliff's show with regards to the goings on in tinseltown.. She is more a socialite, attends all the launches shows etc...
Please please please.. I am begging as a younger generation racing fan to make these sorts of things more appealing... There are so many many many many more alternatives than these celebs.... NO MARKETING/ CONSUMER RESEARCH WHATSOVER... SAD SAD SAD...

Re: Re: Peermont & Emperors Palace to sponsor Charity Mile again
14 years 10 months agoTHE Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile raceday on 6 November is one of the most popular events on the South African racing calendar, bringing together famous people and top-class equine athletes in aid of charity.
Sixteen horses are set to line up in the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile. Each will be represented by a celebrity and will run for a charity, with the sponsors giving away R550,000 to be split among 16 charities. The finishing positions of each runner in the 1600m Charity Mile will determine how much each charity wins - the charity represented by the winner gets R100,000.
The raceday is always chock-full of joy, excitement and tears and every one of the celebrities is looking forward to the big occasion.
The celebrities at Charity Mile include beauty queen Sonia Booth.
SONIA BOOTH
Wife of Bafana Bafana soccer legend Matthew, former beauty queen Sonia Booth has said: ``I always get offended when people call me a celebrity because in my mind there is only one in this country: Tata Nelson Mandela. The rest of us are just people in the public eye, some for the good work they are doing to empower, enrich other people's lives and others just being notorious/infamous.’’
One of the public’s favourite ``eyefuls’’, Sonia was SA finalist in the 1999 Face Of Africa competition and a model at New York Fashion week that year before going on to become second runner-up in the Miss SA pageant in 2001. She moved to Russia when Matthew landed a football contract there from 2003 to ’08 and since their return to South Africa, has started two businesses - a shoe boutique, Bonneventia, and Booth Sports, a T-shirt printing and memorabilia sales company. She is also a trustee and director of the Booth Education and Sports Trust. See her at the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile at Turffontein on 6 November.

14 years 10 months agoCRAIG HINDS
A Springbok water-polo player at school, award-winning band Watershed’s heart-throb lead singer Craig Hinds trained as a teacher, moonlighting as an entertainer in restaurants and bars. The response to his own material was so overwhelming that he was forced to choose between his profession and his ``hobby’’. Since focusing up on the music, Watershed has wowed fans all over the world, with its most enduring ballad being ``Indigo Girl’’, taken from the band’s debut album.
Craig founded Untapped Productions and in 1998, Watershed which has performed on ``Top Of The Pops’’ in Germany and at the first 46664 concert in Cape Town. Its four albums include ``In The Meantime’’ in 2002 and ``Mosaic’’ in 2005, which both achieved platinum sales as well as ``Wrapped in Stone’’ in 2003 and its most recent offering, ``Staring At The Ceiling’’, in 2008, which both achieved gold sales.
From writing and playing music for popular consumption Craig is now also making music for films. He has co-written two songs with Tim Rice for the local animated film ``Jock Of The Bushveld’’.
He won’t be singing, but you’ll see him at the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile at Turffontein on 6 November.

SOME of the most promising two-year-olds last season could be seen in action as early three-year-olds at Turffontein on Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile day.
Horses like Gold Medallion (Grade 1) winner Link Man, who was transferred to trainer Mike de Kock after a good juvenile year with Dennis Drier, trainer Sean Tarry’s Premier’s Champion Stakes (G1) winner Gold Onyx and Kavanagh, who won last season’s SA Nursery (G2) before finishing second in the Premier’s Champion Stakes are among the entries for the R200,000 Graham Beck Stakes over 1400m.
The R165,000 Starling Stakes for three-year-old fillies has such good horses in the entry as Pretty Polly Stakes winner Oochee Agent, who went on to place in two other feature races, highly rated Nova Zembla, who is unbeaten in two starts after dead-heating with Fair Rosalind over 1200m recently, Stormy Coast, third in the Fillies Nursery and ultra-promising Sophomore Fillies 1000 winner Worood.

PHUMELELA PRESS RELEASE
SUBJECT: Pierre Jourdan draws well at No 3 for Charity Mile
PIERRE JOURDAN drew at No 3 for the R600,000 Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday 6 November and his trainer Gary Alexander was delighted with what he described as “a cracking draw”.
“The draw is important over 1600m, especially at Turffontein,” he said. “We’re there for nothing because he won’t have to fight for position. Now we just have to leave it to Andrew (Fortune).”
Alexander added that his star four-year-old’s preparation was going well.
Pierre Jourdan, who has been beaten only twice in his career, made a winning comeback from a long rest in the Joburg Spring Handicap recently and Alexander mused: “It was a surprise when he won, but his class got him through. I’m very happy with him. As an individual he’s getting stronger and bigger all the time. He’s turning over nicely and is on track for the Summer Cup - if he can pull off a win in this race, it’ll be great.”
Pierre Jourdan will run on behalf of the Maphanzela Primary School and will be publicly represented by Bridget Masinga.
Trainer Mike Azzie was not too disappointed when Service Ace drew at No 9, though he said: “I would have liked to be drawn 3, 4, 5, or 6. But nine isn’t a bad draw and he will stay out of trouble from there.
“Obviously the Summer Cup is his mission, so he’s just short of his best, but I have got him well enough to run a nice race. I want him to come out of the race unscathed and to come on from the run.
“I wish the graded race committee would give this race back its Grade 1 status because, looking at the field, it deserves it. It is certainly a race I’m keen on winning. I came so close with Imperial Despatch. And if Service Ace did win it, I would be over the moon.
Service Ace will be represented by Emmanuel Castis and will run for the Peermont Emperors Palace-nominated charity Thembakazi Primary School.
Galanthus’ trainer Tyrone Zackey was also at the draw ceremony and said: “Galanthus is a nice horse and he’s improving daily”.
He confirmed that Galanthus, who was most impressive in winning last week, is still on the upgrade and will be a contender in both Charity Mile and Summer Cup.
