Man held at races, ice thrown at Zuma
August 7 2010 at 07:34am

By Carvin Goldstone and Tanya Waterworth

A Joburg racehorse owner spent a weekend in a police cell on an assault charge after he threw ice at President Jacob Zuma at the Durban July last week.

Moga Pillay - chairman of Gold Circle Racing - was walking with Zuma at the time and said both he and the president were unaware that the man had thrown ice at Zuma.

They were walking from the parade ring up to a private box. The man, who has been identified as Daryl Peense from Alberton, allegedly threw either ice or liquid at Zuma as he passed underneath the box where Peense had been sitting.

Pillay said he threw ice from the balcony down towards Zuma.

"It did not hit the president and he was unaware of the incident, but it was noticed by presidential security who arrested the offender within a minute," Pillay said.

KwaZulu-Natal police director of communications Brigadier Phindile Radebe said a case had been opened.

According to horse auctioneers Bidahorse247 blog, Peense owns a few horses and worked for a number of advertising agencies.

He has been involved in racing for more than 10 years and was in charge of Bidahorse247's advertising.

Peense apparently appeared in court for a bail hearing on Monday and the case was postponed to late September.

"It was such a lovely occasion and it was very unfortunate that someone could mar this event with such disgusting behaviour," said Pillay.

The incident occurred before the Durban July's main race where Zuma went on to win R16 000 after placing a bet on the winning horse, Bold Silvano.

He reportedly made the bet based on his own instincts and and also bet on three other horses with the assistance of Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele.

Ironically, Zuma won the exact amount his wife, Nompumelelo Ntuli, was ordered to pay to a former domestic worker who had taken her to the CCMA over an unfair dismissal.

Zuma also greeted all 20 jockeys in the main race.

@Shayne Welman:

'here talking to the media is about to become an offence ....'

The NHA has pre-empted MAT (ANC's Media tribunal); Charl (a journalist) already on the carpet for merely questioning the secrecy / non-disclosure behind its procedures/ operation relating to drug classification / usage.

Since they both share the same thinking and despotic stables, why has the NHA also not taken immediate action against Peense for bringing the industry into disrepute?

There was talk that the President was going to buy a horse or two; now, he must be switched off by being 'pissed' on!

Or, was it raining that day?

This fool should be slapped with a serious fine, he was totally out of order....whether Zuma is president or not, whether he likes him or not, he had no right to throw ice, water, liquid or whatever at him that's total disrespect....i say he is a fool and must be punished for his foolishness..... :X

@keniza999:

True!

That still does not exonerate the NHA for its selective inaction (over 3 months)!

@umlilo, my question is what was he trying to achieve? didn't he not want the president there, was he showing off to his pals, he dislikes Zuma or simply a racist who disapproves of having a black president. is he the member of the RA, what have they done about it? Having the president at the July is good for racing but fools such as Daryl have no foresight.....

@keniza999 :

I share your thoughts.

Posters on this forum know where I stand on such issues... and I have crossed swords with many cynics. There are also those who look outside their little world and are forthright.

The moot point is: virtually everyone complains about the state of the industry; bad management, asset disappearances, inconsistencies, nepotism, conflicts of interests, fall in interest (of racing), competition (from other gamings, eg Lotto, casinos), etc.

The logical solution is: broaden the base of involvement. Now, when one brings in the other side of the equation, goose pimples appear!

The industry has its target market and its client base. This target market consists, primarily of (majority, mainly middle to upper economic class) white owners, trainers, breeders, officials, etc AGAINST punters (majority blacks from the lower to middle income groups).

In other countries, punters are part and parcel of the horseracing scenario. There is also complete transparency and access to trainers is a given.

In this country, black punters have no contact whatsoever with the trainers, officials and jockeys, except (for those fortunate enough) who read a write up, or, watch Tellytrack (or, visit such foirums where some owners/trainers are transparent).

For them, owning a racehorse or being a trainer is some sort of hallowed ground; it's mysterious, pumped with awe and wonder!

For me, the solution is simple: set aside a kitty, purchase a few decently breds, and offer them on a lease basis to large syndicates of punters (black, white or brown), at about R250 pa. If you have a 1 000 such members in a syndicate, at least 1 000 more will be at the tracks when the horses run (not including their family, friens and colleagues). You see such scenes in Hong Kong.

BUT, this scenario cannot be even distantly speculated on!

The majority of whites (as liberal as they might come across), inwardly will resent hordes of blacks teeming onto the race tracks and the lounges, creeping into their turf territory (during the corporatisation process, when I queried about a vehicle for bringing in blacks as owners, I was told 'You give them a horse and they'll bloody eat it!'), is just one reason!

On the other hand, those cliques that have virtual control of the industry (white and their black consorts, of whom one never hears!), will not want to relinquish their power base to such unpredictable rabble, or, for that matter, to another group of whites! It's a big money game being played out behind the curtains!

The recent tug-of-war in the boardrooms of the NHA bears testimony to my submission.

Then also consider that the directors of Investec (not only own large slices of almost controlling shares in Phumelela), also infiltrate the Racing Association, Racing Trust and the NHA with their 'security guards/custodians' to ensure that nobody rocks the boat and affects shareholder profits by any rash decision or trajectory. To compound issues, they own substantial numbers of horses with numerous trainers. Some of these trainers also sit on the NHA. There's open conflicts of interests, nepotism, personal agendas.... you name it!

Add to this embroglio (not de Broglio!), the total lack of meaningful transformation of the industry?

So, what do we do?

Bit long-winded response, but, about time it's been said as it is! Besides, I am getting tired of this game and all the shenanigans which cloud the real issues for redress!

Amandla!
