Ebony and Igugu clash in Cape Fillies Guineas
Preview: South Africa, Saturday 3.15pm GMT
Kenilworth: Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas (Grade 1) 1m, turf, 3yo fillies
THE first Classic of the season is dominated by the unbeaten Ebony Flyer (Justin Snaith/Bernard Fayd’Herbe) and the highly regarded Australian import Igugu (Mike de Kock/ Anthony Delpech). Local layer Betting World goes 3-5 Ebony Flyer, 6-5 Igugu and 16 bar.
The massive Ebony Flyer, 17.1 hands and 556 kilos, is a half-sister by champion sire Jet Master to the 2007 winner Captain’s Lover. She annihilated a field that included five of this opposition in the Odessa Stud Championship (G2) over a furlong less here four weeks ago.
Snaith, bidding for his third Fillies Guineas win in four seasons, said: “She is right up there with Captain’s Lover and my 2008 winner Sparkling Gem. She has come on since the Odessa and is now at her very best.”
Igugu, by Galileo out of an Aga Khan mare, met with her first defeat in four starts in the valuable Ready To Run Cup over 7f at Turffontein four weeks ago. She was beaten a length by Hollywoodboulevard who franked the form by trotting up in a Grade 3 last Saturday.
De Kock said: “That Ready To Run performance was a hell of an effort considering her poor preparation. She hadn’t pulled up well from her previous win and we’d had to lay off her for ten days.
“She was making up ground on Hollywoodboulevard at the end of the race and, as her pedigree suggests, the further she goes the better she will be. She has come on quite a bit since and I’m expecting a big run.”
However, despite the apparent dominance of the big two, it could be worth noting that this race has a reputation for upsets.
Only two favourites have won in the past nine years and on two occasions during that period victory went to 40-1 and 50-1 shots who had finished nowhere on their most recent start.

I know it is only ante post but to have 11/20 and 12/10 after the claim is disgraceful. If a cricket match with only two outcomes was priced up like this I would refuse to bet on it. Surely if you are pricing it up as a two horse race and one horse gets claimed in 3 points the other should go out to at least to 7/10.
Looking forward though to a great contest though and wouldn't be suprised in Snaith runs 1-2.
