Info on PE racing
14 years 7 months ago
I have a question for Magiclips (I think thats right)
Please dispence some free advice, I have a few horses that are running between 3 and 9 lengths off in JHB in maidens. A lot of people are telling me to send them to PE. My problem is I think PE is stronger, or are Bold Silvano and Lizard's Desire just freaks. No really don't you agree that the form in PE is stonger than JHB for battlers.
I notice you love the PE racing so I thought I would take a liberty.
Thanks

I would give them a try in PE. Bold Silvano and Lizard's Desire are the exception in PE just as Pierre Jourdan and Pocket Power are the exception in Jhb and Cape Town. It isn't always easy to win races in PE because the fields (especially in maiden plates) tend to be very big no matter how many extra Monday meetings they put on, but if you can run three lengths off in Gauteng I would certainly give it a try.
Mind you, you might want to consider KZN at this time of year. The maiden plates here are extremely weak on the whole, and the stakes are still better than PE's (just). I could easily be convinced that most KZN maiden races in summer are no stronger than their PE equivalents.
However, some horses improve out of all recognition when they go to PE, others never do. Until you've tried it you will never know and I would give it a bash - but do give KZN plenty of thought as an alternative, at least for the remaining summer months while our racing is at its lowest point.

for my 2cents pe racing bar a few horses is extremely weak especially amongst the maiden ranks,,,many horses with pathetic form in the 3 other centres go down there and trot up in maiden races and beyond... if your horses are running 3 to 9 lengths off in geniune maiden races and not the qualified half stakes races in gauteng they will trot up in pe and go on from there

Thanks ! I know its a problem country wide but my trainer in KZN didn't want the horses in question he said he would battle to get a run for them as there are so many noms for maidens this time of year.
What is the situation like in PE interms of this? They are running quite regularly in Gauteng just missing the money every time.
Another thought is the stakes on a 5th place that we still get in PE always help. I ran 5th with one of my maidens I moved to KZN the other day and got a big toffee for the effort.

It's true that KZN maiden races get huge noms (because in GC country noms are free), especially in races up to 1600m. And the 5th stake does help, not only have we done away with 5th stake but the 4th stake is half of what it used to be,
So on reflection, to hell with KZN - send your horses to PE. The difference in the stakes is getting smaller anyway, and you'll have fewer aggravations with washed out meetings on top of it.

I wonder what the KZN owners would say if they started charging noms and used ALL the money to increase the stakes pot?
I would be in favour and it might stop trainers nominating just to keep owners happy and then not accepting.

That's what we are here for!
Thinking a bit more about Orange's question, consider this: in KZN you have to race against De Kock, Charles Laird, Herman Brown's expensive horses, etc. In PE you often will find yourself racing against their chuckouts, for stakes that are pretty good considering. In fact, you are better off finishing 4th (never mind 5th) in PE than in Gold Circle territory, so at the risk of pissing off the GC crowd (wouldn't be the first time
) I really don't see too many benefits to racing non-Feature type horses in Durban rather than PE. Especially if you don't live in KZN so can't go to the stables every week or to the course every time they run, etc.

I often wonder the same thing. For an organisation that is as cash-strapped as Gold Circle it seems almost amazing that they continue to overlook this source of additional revenue for the stakes pot.

Good question Ants. Also which ones were gelded since their last run.
