Help/ Advice Needed for the treatment of abnormal muscle enzymes
14 years 5 months ago
Hi Clan Members
I am opening this thread in the hope that some of our posters viz. owners, trainers, vets and racing scribes might be able to shed some light on a problem that I have with one of my fillies.
My filly, La Pucelle has an "abnormal muscle enzyme count". This is resulting in the muscles tying up. The problem seems to be intermittent.
In the one week the count is normal (between 300 to 500). Then in the next week the count sky rockets to about 2000. We have encounted this problem ever since she faded in the last 100metres in the Debutantes when she was striding short.
Duncan has tried numerously vets, used bute, cortizone etc but it all seems to be a "trial and error thing" at the moment. He had even weaned her down, cut down the maize intake and introduced a combination of hay and oils (which was suggested at the recent international conference for vets in Cape Town).
Our local vets have not had any success.
When the enzymes levels are within tolerance, the filly is exceptional at work. She would leave a "top sort" for dead on the track. Last week she could not even keep up with a maiden. We do have her entered for this Sunday (if they race). Duncan will do another enzyme test tomorrow and then decides if she runs.
Duncan tells me that in all his years as a trainer and an assistant to David Payne, this is only the second time that he has encounted a problem such as this. The first time with Payne, the filly was given a total break on a farm. When she did come back into racing, she won her next 4 starts on a trot. Maybe this is what we should do after this Sunday.
Duncan and I are reluctant to retire her because he really rates her. As Duncan puts it, "In ability there is no difference between La Pucelle and Romantic Moon, if any thing La Pucelle is better over the shorter trip".
Any advice would be welcome but don't ask me to put some lead in her left ear.
Thank You
PS: I have just been told that Terrance Millard had a horse called Faralmond with a similiar problem.

East..... I have volumes of info on this subject....many nutricuetical products on the market.....best for most is a lipoic/pantothethenic acid derivatives but fillies can respond as well to selinium/vitamin E + DMG or N,N Dimethylglycine a metabolite that helps push back the anaerobic theshold by improving oxygen uptake and transport within the cells . DMG has been proven to reduce the production of lactate in exercising racehorses. Both Vitamin E and Selenium are important anti oxidants working to scavenge free radicals that damage muscle cells under stress. Selenium is required for the formation of glutathione peroxidase a buffer to pyruvates formed during the anaerobic exercise stage of mitochontria. It is when excess pyruvate cannot be converted that lactate is produced resulting in not only increasing levels of acid but energy production begins to decline as the mitochondria run out of usable fuel, causing additional muscle fatigue.
