POCKET POWER - why stop now?
14 years 4 months ago
I watched Pocket Power do his Met gallop and if ever a horse owns Kenilworth, he is it.
I can see why we all want the very best for Pocket Power and see him off with his gold watch, but just watching him I have to ask myself isn't he perfectly happy where he is?
It's just my opinion, but wouldn't it be great if PP just retired from travelling to KZN and stayed with us while he seems to be in great health and spirits. It's sad if he is retired because of our 'mistaken' concern for him. I'm sure he has the very best care with Bass (to an extreme!) which would go on as long as PP likes.
Just because Gary Player doesn't beat the current log leader anymore doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy a round on his favourite course with his mates.

I would like to remember the champ for his brilliant wins, not just sneaking into places... Just a thought:)

This game after all is horseracing and not horse parading.

Greg, I respect your memories, but what about the horse?

On the subject of BIG doubles and great champs what about Pocket Power and Kauto Star both going out with a bang, Met and Gold Cup
Now that would be a BIG double

Jack he is not winning races like we are use to, imo he is aging:( .... In the human race when we age we retire, go fishing, sit on our patio etc .... no different with PP, let the old boy retire to some lekker meadow in the W-Cape...

Greg, if he runs 2nd in the Met, will that be enough for you? 2nd is also a place, but perhaps if the next best thing beats him, he should also retire? I say no! Running places in Group1 fields is a great feat for any horse....including the Pocket

It think it's been pretty much confirmed this morning during the draw that the Met will be his last race - and imo it is the correct decision

If the champ WANTS to run, is healthy and fit and we are afforded the pleasure of watching and hoping....why not?

I also think the champ deserves a retirement, he has done all that was asked of him and more.
