Decent price there Barry, 1.7 million.
Did you have a look at the colt? On conformation how highly does he rate with you personally?

I bred and sold the half-brother to Ebony Flyer.
He sold right at my reserve.
I thought he was a smashing colt.
His lone conformation defect was a slightly offset right knee.
He has a ton of quality.
I let him go because I wanted my investors to realize a nice price from a public sale and they got it.
We plan to sell yearlings every year and have more than a dozen mares in production, half being Grade 1 winners or producers.
Tommy, unless you are a resident of New York or born there, you are not required to give an opinion on EVERYTHING under the sun. Stick to what you know, as you are plenty good at that.
As for the other crapola I read on this thread, I guess a surgeon might be required for resolution of foot-in-mouth disease.

Barry, did you look at a lot of lots on offer? I know you mostly buy fillies but I liked lot 132 on breeding. Did you by chance have a look at this son of Dynasty?
He was sold to Alec Laird for R120k. just wondering if you thought this was a fair price or if he should have fetched more?

Tommy, I only looked at two colts: my homebred Captain Al and the Trippi out of my old mare Stratos. Sorry.
I looked at a few colts out back as they prepared to into the ring and I will say this: the breeders upped their game for this sale, as the horses looked fantastic.
Special kudos to Varsfontein Stud. When they normally sell in Germiston, their stock is somewhat backward. At this sale, however, their horses were well advanced in their physical readiness and they reaped the rewards with a tremendously successful sale.
I thought Benny Marais of Klipdrif had an outstanding looking lot.
The breeders deserve a lot of credit for adapting to the new date and format.
Personally, I would rather have seen 100 outstanding lots than 290 horses of varying types.
Interestingly, when I look at about 3 times as many fillies at the Germiston sale, I usually come up with 14 to 15 to have a second look at. I came up with the same number here from only a third as many fillies. That says a lot about quality to me.

Pirates, I have to tell you, some of your comments boggle the mind.
1. AUTHORITY -- a "good mate." The fact that this person is a fine friend of yours in some way makes him a guru to whom others should pay heed?
2. BEST HORSES -- the "best horses are NEVER put on sale." This insinuates that the nuggets are kept by the breeders. This is completely unfounded. The list of successful horses sold at public auction throughout the world is nothing short of astonishing.
3. PROOF -- "today's group ones both winners home bred." One cannot take a small sampling and make a blanket statement that insinuates that breeders hold back their best stock from the sales. First of all, there were 3 Grade 1 races, not 2. Two of them, indeed, were home-breds. But the winner of the biggest race on the day--and arguably one of the 3 best races on the SA calendar, was not bred by its owner.
Some breeders rarely or never offer horses at public auction. But of those that do, I would be surprised to learn that they held back their top stock. Covenant was only kept because as a broodmare prospect, she was considered too important to the breeding program to part with, which is not an uncommon practice employed by market breeders throughout the world. If her dam were younger and still alive, I feel certain that she would have been offered at public auction, along with the rest of the Varsfontein consignment.
The ABC boards are unfortunately dotted with unkind, paranoid and sick comments proffered by a small band of losers that knock successful people because they cannot believe in the notion that their success was achieved by legitimate means. They are always questioning the motives of others and making snide remarks. I feel sorry for these people, because the boat has sailed and they were left at the dock.
