Winter Solstice dies :(
14 years 3 months ago
Sad news from Racing Post:
South Africa: Winter Solstice, horse of the year in 2005, has been killed by lightning.
The gelding's death happened in a storm over the Drakenstein Stud near Franschhoek in the Western Cape, which had been his home since his retirement fromracing.
His trainer Joey Ramsden said: "Winter Solstice has to have been the best I've trained but above all he was the most incredibly consistent horse.
"Sadly, only the good die young and he was only ten. He didn't deserve to die."
Winter Solstice won 12 races including four Grade 1s - the Queen's Plate twice, the Gold Challenge and the Champions Cup. He was also third in the 2005 J & B Met.

Maybe you should have a look around and smell the coffee, Mickey, before slinging off.
It was mentioned on tellyTrack at the very time it happened.
Robyn Louw wrote about it in her Sporting Post column last week.

OK, Mickey does make a good point.
TellyTrack isn't available to everybody.
Neither is Sporting Post.
Racing Xpress is parochial, you won't find it outside Gauteng.
So it's up to Independent Newspaper group, which gets all info from the Phumelela/Gold writers, to put in daily columns country-wide.
Did they?
I don't know.
The Racing Post article was by Michael Clower, who is the Cape correspondent for the Independent newspapers - so presumably it must have been in the local press, too.
