Here is something else that Gauteng trainers don't talk much about: when a horse is trained at altitude and comes down to sea level, they have a temporary edge that lasts for about a week.

The benefits of altitude training are well known by conditioners of track and field athletes. The United States Olympic tracksters train at altitude in the mountains of Colorado.

I could go on and on, but I am sure everybody gets the point.

So when a Gauteng horse raids Cape Town, they are capable or running huge up to a week after arrival. After that their long capacity returns to normal function just the rest of the horses that train at sea level.
