Jackpot rollover expected to break £2m barrier

THE Tote Jackpot is expected to break through the £2 million mark on Tuesday and could offer the biggest pool in the bet's history after punters failed to land the monster rollover at Ffos Las on Monday.

The bet, which has not been won since Fontwell on February 27, moves on to Exeter on Tuesday after those chasing the £989,008 pot were out of luck on Monday, with no units making it through to the sixth and final leg at the Welsh track.

A big-priced opening double (14-1 and 8-1) for trainer Michael Blanshard and jockey Jimmy McCarthy reduced the units to 1,739.65 after the opening two legs, while Ready Or Not (7-1) and Mickmacmagoole (5-1) wins reduced the contenders further.

Four of the six runners in the fifth leg were covered, but Derawar's 7-2 success means the bet rolls over once again.

"The eyes of the racing world will be focused on Exeter as punters up and down the country try to land the Tote Jackpot and we fully expect the pool not only to smash the £2 million barrier, but potentially be the biggest in the history of the bet," Tote spokesman George Primarolo said on Monday evening.

The biggest Jackpot pool ever offered was at Haydock last August, when it reached £2,308,852. The biggest dividend came at Aintree three years ago when the bet returned £510,955.60 to a £1 stake.

Just one winning ticket can make such a difference!

Steve Whiteley in a whirl after ToteJackpot win

STEVE WHITELEY had the perfect excuse for not giving his partner, Jill Dilley, a present on her 53rd birthday on Wednesday as the couple were still trying to come to terms with his record Tote Jackpot win of £1.4 million at Exeter the day before.

The self-employed heating engineer from North Tawton in Devon had been due to return to work, but his customers - including one with a burst pipe - were forced to wait after he suddenly found himself at the centre of a worldwide media frenzy.

Waking up an overnight celebrity with his success story plastered across the national press, including front-page photographs in the Racing Post and Britain's best-selling tabloid, The Sun, Whiteley, 61, was in such demand for TV and radio interviews from around the globe he eventually had to take his phone off the hook.

"It has been absolutely crazy and I haven't been able to go to work yet," he said. "I've lost track of how many interviews I've done, but two were with stations in Australia."

Scoop6 bonus goes and one player wins Placepot

THE Tote Scoop6 bonus was won on Saturday after one of the Ladbrokes customers who staked £2 on the bet last weekend successfully selected Eton Forever in the William Hill Spring Mile at Doncaster on an afternoon when all six favourites were beaten.

This meant the winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, picked up a total of £383,589 after adding £349,807 to the £33,782 he collected seven days earlier when sharing the win pool with four other ticket-holders.

The latest win fund was not won so there is a rollover of £60,842 while the bonus starts again next Saturday with £26,503 in the pot. The remaining nine tickets were knocked out after the fourth leg when Sweet Lightning won the William Hill Lincoln.

A total of £176,692 was bet into the pools, and with a host of big-priced horses filling the frame, there was only winner of the place fund, which paid a massive £35,338 to a punter who placed his £2 bet in a Totesport shop in Wigan.

Totepool spokesman, George Primarolo, said: "Not only did Eton Forever land a whopping amount for our £2 bonus hunter, but another £2 punter picked up £35,338 on the place fund which goes to show you don't even have to pick a winner in the Scoop6 to land a life-changing sum."
