Noordhoek Flyer retired to stud

Leading Western Cape-based trainer Dean Kannemeyer’s dual Guineas winner Noordhoek Flyer has been retired to stud. He will stand this breeding season at the Gary Player Stud Farm in Colesberg. The shares have been priced up at the very reasonable price of R60,000. His initial service fee is R10 000, which looks like a cracking deal considering the horse’s conformation, race record and pedigree.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift, Noordhoek Flyer was a R2.5 million buy at the 2008 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. An extremely handsome horse, Noordhoek Flyer is a son of the world-class stallion and speedster Pivotal – sire of over 90 stakes winners to date. Pivotal, who stands for a fee of the equivalent of over R600 000, has sired 17 individual G1 winners including champions Sariska, Somnus, Excellent Art and Halfway to Heaven. He has been represented by champions all over the world, and is arguably the best stallion currently standing at stud in Britain. Pivotal is already the sire of proven G1 sires Captain Rio and Kyllachy, whilst the first crop of his son Excellent Art have been much sought after.

His dam, Serra Negra, is by champion miler and sire Kris. Kris, former champion sire in the UK, is the broodmare sire of one of Europe’s top sires – Invincible Spirit. This is the family of champions Mastery, Cherokee Rose, Alkaased and champion 2yo Welsh Garden . It is also the family of champion sire Volksraad.

A sensational racehorse trained out of Milnerton by the Cape’s leading Classic trainer, Dean Kannemeyer, , Noordhoek Flyer won two classics and over R1.2 million in a career shortened by injury. He won both the G1 Bloodstock SA Cape Guineas and G2 KRZ Guineas. He was also second to subsequent J&B Met winner Past Master in the G2 Selangor Cup in 2009 and second to the then unbeaten Bravura in that season’s G1 Investec Cape Derby. Like so many great stallions, Noordhoek Flyer was at his finest over a mile. Other recent top South African sires to show their optimal form over a mile include Jet Master, Captain Al and Western Winter.


Noordhoek Flyer was a horse who possessed a tremendous turn of foot, and few will forget the way he accelerated past his rivals to win the G2 KRA Guineas. He defeated the best of his generation, with horses such as Bold Silvano, Ancestral Fore and Irish Flame amongst those left in his wake. Trainer Dean Kannemeyer said Noordhoek Flyer possessed terrific speed, heart, temperament and class and had all the makings of a champion sire in the years to come.
