Feedback from trainers???
14 years 2 months ago
Hi all
I have a query which I hope you will be able assist with. I have shares in 2 unraced 2yo's with one of the larger Gauteng yards. They have been with the stable for 6 months and in that time I have had a brief update on one occasion. I believe that this is not good enough but the question is how often should a trainer report back?
Thanks in advance

That is the main problem for me as an owner, communication!!!
I sometimes never even knew my horse was running or even ran!!!
I arrived at the Vaal once, wrote down the scratchings, my horse!!!
One of my fillies injured her back, I heard this from a groom, a month later!!
But luckily not all trainers are the same, I have had some very good feedback as well!!

Get twitter and get the groom a pair of Lacoste Shoes. Lots of feedback daily.

it sounds as if if you not a major owner with many horses you in the dark. and there i was thinking owning a horse would be something great and worth working hard towards.... i just get put off by these stories. i mean where would a 27 year old like myself would wanna put his horse should i invest or where would i like to start in order to enjoy it very much? is it really worth it? i would love to think so but not from what i hear.... truth hurts but it is helpfull.

I had a "fair" filly with Justin Snaith when he started out back in 2002, Jonno would mail at least once a week, and when the girl ran I got an email and sms. Totally pro's those guys are, just wish I could afford another to send them!

Snaith very good, get "official" emails re: nominations/races/chances/after race etc, plus one of our partners phones 2/3 times a week and gets updates on progress. The basic training in PE is R4,200 per month.
Good guys!

Maybe I'm being cynical here, but if I owned a horse and did not get much feedback from the trainer, I would start thinking that my horse does not have much ability, or perhaps the trainer is not as good as I first thought. Let's face it, if you owned the next Pocket Power, most trainers would be very foolish not to be loving you. So if you believe your horse does have some ability, change trainers. I have seen it happen before that horses that have changed trainers, sometimes improve remarkably.

Not trying to defend the trainers, but unraced horses sometime takes more than a year to get to a stage where they can be entered into a race (The Non-Achiever comes to mind) and it is also difficult to pinpoint how long this process takes for an individual horse - so it is most likely a case of no news being good news; however a note/message once a month stating something along the lines of 'we are bringing him/her along slowly' is surely to be expected.
Another thing to consider is whether you would prefer a great communicator or a great trainer - and then try (unfortunately by trial and error) to find the one that suits your needs best - imo you need to build a relationship with your trainer so that it will not be 'uncomfortable' to pick up the phone and ask the questions you need answered

From my experience I have had certain trainers who gave excellent communication and other's gave no feedback. Our trainer is at the Vaal and as an owner I go to the Yard once a month on a Sunday morning to watch the horses work and get updates on all our horses. This also allows you see for yourself the progress they are making from month to month. Our trainer there also informs us of every thing that happens in his yard.
Communication is a two way street and the more interest you show your trainer the feedback they generally give you.

I have never owned but would love too.... but hey if "my" trainer doesnt give "feedback" well then i would seriously consider "moving" the horse/s. I see it this way.. my horse is my "INVESTMENT" & i would want feedback on how my investment is doing. I would also think that training stables should have a "P.R.O" to inform owners about the health & welfare of their horse/s unless the trainer himself is up to the task. And YES... being on friendly terms with the stable should be of utmost importance.
When you buy shares in a company dont you want monthly updates?

And then would you be willing to fork out another R500 (say) per month in stabling fees in order to pay for the PRO?
