Amongst sprinters, I would put COGITATE (herald ll x Thinker), ridden by Bertie Hayden and bred by Harry Barnett at Springvale Stud, KZN.
I had the pleasure of watching him win a race when I was still at school; unreal as, about 200m out, he weaved his way through the leading pack, came out on the outside, and 50m from the line, drew away to win effortlessly!

In Full Flight by a country mile.He won his first race at clairwood drawn 20 out of 20 down the straight. In those days you never won from that draw as the outside dead going.,he beat a in fom horse of N. Pearce by a distance. When he collapsed and died a day or to later after the met et his stable in milnerton the vet found that he had a much bigger size heart than the normal racehorse.Ithink even after all Davids success he would still rate him as the best horse he ever trained

Pretty Border....there's a name I haven't heard in many moons. Good to know I'm not the only one on here who could already walk upright in the 1970s.(

My favourite (for obvious reasons) was Asylum Seeker.
Being to young
to really comment on the likes of In Full Flight, Sea Cottage, Gatecrasher, etc. in terms of the 'best' I have to go with Horse Chestnut; and I also remember a sprinter from way back when named Glory Be - without checking on his record I seem to remember he was a great sprinter in his day?

If my memory served he won 9 in a row, and was 1/10 on to win the Castrol National Sprint and got rolled by 25/1 shot Pyrmont.... but I sure the sage ML can confirm...

I think you've got that spot on, ismikle. What you forgot to add is that after that first defeat Glory Be was never the same horse again and in fact never won another race.

WOLF POWER, will never forget how he defied the Hawaiian ambush..
Always hoped for the unmaterialised clash between JET MASTER and HORSE CHESTNUT..
POCKET POWER, as an early 4yo he showed his potential class when he should have won the Cape Merchants/Flying championship? but was "pulled back" to save the added weight for the Met..
And now IGUGU..

Polititian - when he won the Met - and Sun Classique - when she won the Balanchine. Both were blocked for a run till very late in their races, both came from hopeless positions and won in a thriller.
