UD, there are many books on horseracing, you must decide in which topic you are interested.

I'm just about to order this

Winning it back by Gary Wiltshire

The compelling rags-to-riches story of larger than life punter, bookmaker and BBC television pundit.

The imposing presence of Gary Wiltshire has long been one of the familiar and colourful sights on the racecourses and dog tracks of Britain. Biggest of the big gamblers, Gary has been punter, racecourse bookmaker, and in recent years television pundit, heading BBC coverage of the betting ring.

But there are two sides to Gary Wiltshire. One shows the genial, wise-cracking personality revelling in every angle of the betting business, the poor boy made good, with racehorses running in his colours and a personalised number-plate on his Mercedes. The other shows his obsessive punting bringing him to what he unflinchingly calls 'rock bottom'. The story tells how from the age of five he could calculate the return on a bet; how he would serve the Kray twins at his father's flower stall in Leather Lane; how he famously lost £1 million on the day of Frankie Dettori's 'Magnificent Seven' at Ascot – and then sold all he had so that he could pay off every penny he owed, and started again. It is a remarkable rollercoaster ride of good and bad fortune, by turns hilarious and heart-rending.

How Wiltshire lost the R10M was he layed the last winner of Frankie`s 7 winners at 7/2 instead of 2/1 that Ladbrokes and co wanted the horse returned. You can`t blame him really he thought he was stealing money laying a 20/1 shot at 7/2

Do you think handicapping methods used in the UK and USA would work here in darkest Africa? What are Beyer speed figures, is that like a merit rating?

I have from Seabiscuit, Horse Chestnut, Robert Sangster,They lived to race - Jaffees, the Who's who in Racing (autobiographies), books on racing and breeding racehorses, cataloques Germiston one from 1960's up to date, mags: The South African Racehorse from 1965, British Racehorse and Irish Racing and Breeding from 1965, Thoroughbred Breeding, Racing Records, Horse and Hound's.

Then I have fiction: all Dick Francis' novels, nearly all John Francombe's, and many other authors. And of course all Charl Pretorius'.

Geez element - catalogues from 1960 up to date 8-); I have boxes full of Computaforms in the garage - my wife keeps threatening to dump them :S

Secretariat was very 'technical', but I enjoyed it; then there is also a book about Funny Cide (Derby and Preakness winner a few seasons ago) which is apparently a good read
