Wimbledon back in the league
14 years 2 weeks ago
Wimbledon are back in the English pro league 2 . After they were sold and the franchise relocated to Milton Keynes the supporters decided not to follow the team to Milton Keynes aka MK Dons. They decided to put their money together and form a club which started playing the the lower league in the Southern Section. After a couple of Promotions to the Conference (a league just below the League 2) today they got promoted by beating Luton Town on penalties. The history shows us that between the 70s and 80s they won promotion from the old 4th Division right up to the old 1st Division.
Who can ever forget them beating Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup Final. Is history about to repeat itself. Only time will tell.

Do their fans sing....
"Underground, overground, wombling free
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we
Making good use of the things that we find
Things that the everyday folks leave behind
Uncle Bulgaria
He can remember the days when he wasn't behind the times
With his map of the world
Pick up the papers and take 'em to Tobermory
Wombles are organised, work as a team
Wombles are tidy and Wombles are clean
Underground, overground, wombling free
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we
People don't notice us, they never see
Under their noses a Womble may be
We womble by night and we womble by day
Looking for litter to trundle away
We're so incredibly utterly devious
Making the most of everything
Even bottles and tins
Pick up the pieces and make 'em into something new
Is what we do
Underground, overground, wombling free
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we
Making good use of the things that we find
Things that the everyday folks leave behind"
Bring back any memories?

I saw them play when Vinnie Jones and co used to play for them. They were rough and used to kick the crap out of every opposition player. Stories are that the week before a team where to play them opposition players fell sick or they mysteriously slipped at home and injured their foot so that they missed the match against Wimbledon. Their old home ground, Plough Lane, was situated in the middle of a roundabout. The toilets stank like urine and the terraces were broken and the tin stand used to shake when the wind blew and if it rained you would get soaked even if you were sitting in the stands. The opponents dressing rooms light bulbs would be removed and the hot water not turned on. They made it as uncomfortable as possible. That would never happen today. The players intimidated the refs to no end thus they hardly ever lost at home. In the dying days of the club they ground shared at Selhurst Park with Crystal Palace and used to train in Richmond Park. I hope that one day they get back into the Premiership and get Vinnie Jones back to manage them.

From a Dennis Wise freekick Bruce. Grobbelar was the Liverpool keeper and the Wimbledon keeper Dave Beasant saved a penalty as well.
