Horse Chestnut 2011 Covering Season
14 years 3 days ago
Horse Chestnut has enjoyed great popularity in his first two seasons in South Africa, in 2009 and 2010, standing at a fee of R35 000. He covered 88 mares in 2009 and 82 mares in 2010. Although Claiborne Farm initially recommended that he should cover no more than 60 mares a year, Ross Fuller has found his libido to be excellent and that his fertility improves with frequent coverings. Therefore he is a horse well suited to a book of between 80-100 mares.
We have recieved very good reports about his foals, which are generally like him with good size, strength, good bone and legs.
In 2011, we have debated reducing his stud fee, given that this is his third season, and that there is a perception that the market has softened in line with the current economic recession.
Horse Chestnut has always been most popular with all of the racing fraternity because he is the Great Horse Chestnut - and there is hardly a trainer or owner in the country that does not want to own one of his progeny.
Consequently, as a gift to the racing fraternity, we have decided that Horse Chestnut will stand for a never to be repeated fee of R15 000 Live Foal in 2011 targeting 100 mares.
Proven Sire
Horse Chestnut continues to have winners in the USA, to date his progeny have won more than US$16 Million (over R115 Million). Siring an excellent 68% winners to runners, his progeny have won over 500 races and his average winnings per runner is an impressive US$58 533 ( over R400 000). His progeny have also won 24 stakes races so far.
His best daughter, Lucifer's Stone (out of a mare by the little known Demon's Begone) is a Group 1 winner at Belmont Park in New York over 1600m, and earned $403,321. His highest stakes winning colt is a sprinter called Smart Enough (out of a mare by the obscure No Sale George) and he is a tough, durable turf horse who has won 12 races and is a multiple graded stakes winner of US$873 000 so far.
In South Africa, Horse Chestnut has 7 imported progeny that have raced here with 5 winning a total of 18 races including Cashew Nut ( Won the Kings Pact S. and was 3rd in the Three Troikas S. Gr.3), Woman of the Year (USA) (8 wins to date and earnings in excess of R400 000) and Parviflora (3 Wins Including the Queen of the Sand S.).
First SAf Crop
Horse Chestnut's first SA crop will come uip for sale as yearlings at the 2012 Cape Premier Yearling Sale and the NYS. Judging by the interest from trainers countrywide and the number of visitors to Drakenstein Stud who want to see Horse Chestnut and have the photo taken with him, the interest is going to be huge.
Bookings
Horse chestnut targets 100 mares for 2011. He already has 60 mares booked and therefore places at the new fee are likely to be limited. I am attaching relevant information and a booking form for your interest.

Would say that R15,000 is a decent price.
